[RESOLVED] W2K & NT not keeping desktop

I have a NT4 Domain Server (1 PDC & 2 BDC's) with NT4 & W2K Pro workstations. My problem is that some settings such as changing wallpaper are not saved when logging out & logging back in. This happens on both the NT4 & W2K workstations even if logged in with admin rights. There are no Mandatory profiles & I went through all the policies. Cannot find why this is happening. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thx...

Try rebuilding the profile. Remove the romaing profile on all of the pc's that particular user uses. Then have that user log into the domain from any pc. Before the user logs out, delete the profile off of the domain controllers. Then have the user log out, and the entire profile will automatically be uploaded to the server.

I know this sounds confusing, but it should solve your problem.

Is the Registry size large enough to accomodate the changes? I've seen where this prevents a users desktop from retaining custom settings because the max regisrty size was 8MB and the actual registry size was 9MB. Right-click My Computer -> Properties -> Performance -> Change. You'll see Maximum Registry size in lower right-hand corner. This is for NT4, not sure about 2000 yet. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. It doesn't seem to be a profile problem since this problem happens with any username login including administrator on any computer. Whether it is a roaming profile or not doesn't change anything. I also verified the registry settings & all is OK.

is there a gpo that is restricting save changes to the desktop? if there is...be sure it's not affecting the admins too

I double-checked & there are no policies in place preventing desktop changes...The mystery continues!!!

heres a stupid question - can you change the profile if its a mandatory one? if you can, that could be why its not saving the desktop...

As an admin, you can change a mandatory profile, but not as a user. But in our case, we are not even using mandatory profiles so it's not an issue here. All we have are roaming & local profiles.
