It depends on what she digs and how powerful the laptop is...
I am sure you could get some Quake 2 going...
Maybe Age Of Empires...
Starcraft...
Half Life... ? ?
Serious Sam (even though was having problems playing that LAN style tonight.... was like it was a 56K connection trying to connect across the world, not just between rooms like the 2 pcs were trying to do)
If it aint broke, TWEAK it!
When in doubt, throw it out!!

A great pair of games for LANing that require very little in the way of resources would be Warcraft I and II. Warcraft I will run just dandy on a 486.

For just the two of you, FPS's won't be much fun. Diablo II is a great game, standalone or multi-player. And since it's cooperative, less likely to cause family squabbles when she whoops your butt.

Do I need a disc in each computer to run Rogue Spear over a LAN? Whenever I start the game it counts down the seconds and then *boink* "connection lost with server" What's up? Any help?

Try System Shock 2, it is awesome with the multiplayer patch. Great game play.

Let me add this one to all the excellent suggestions so far.
Descent III - you can have 1-on-1 or coop matches.
Excellent graphics and gameplay is satisfying for both hardcore and "relaxed" players. There are a variety of missions to accomplish so it shouldn't get boring too quickly.
If the S3 card can't handle the graphics, there's always Descent II

Microsoft's Motocross Madness 2 is awesome. The wife loves it and kicks my butt most of the time.
The game is only $20 at Wal-Mart and one copy will run three machines(the CD is needed to start the game).
