    ...."CD that came with the board has drivers for Via technologies"....

    So the infamous AC97 chip .....?

    This particular 'integrated' sound chip is famed for its non-integration ...

    Can you post the exact motherboard model, please ... there's 'varieties' of this chip ... it mightn't even be correctly identified by windows.....

    I appreciate you already have drivers, but perhaps for the wrong 'variety', manufacturers often get confus-ed themselves

    i have the same problem, but im not sure of teh specs of my motherboard - i think it is Mercury SIS746 AMD 8xAGP - because on the invoice for the computer it has (m/b) next to this, but if theres a surefire way for me to find out the specs please could sum1 tell me how to do it, thanks..i was using c-media ac97 on win98, but since upgradin to xp non of the xp drivers for this seem to work. and theres the microsoft kernel errors

    each time i try to use regedit it vanishes after a few seconds of browsing.. any ideas why it does this?

    Welcome to WD saintz .

    Did you do a upgrade from 98 to XP ?

    To find out more about your PC
    download this and run it ;
    http://www.lavalys.com/products/over...ng=en&pageid=1

    and under 'Motherboard' and 'Devices' it will tell you lots ,
    under 'Devices' you'll look for anything 'audio' and tell us what you find .

    these should be the drivers for that board

    Regedit closing is indicative of virus activity or spyware.
