Try Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit , I don't use it overly much as I usually recognise all the bits (hopefully) but its very usefull for the non 'nerd' among us !! ... its a start in your 'quest' anyway .... it should give you a list of your hardware & installed software, run it & if you still aren't sure post the 'multimedia' section of its report up.
