With what you are giving I am wondering if this is onboard sound versus a separate card.
How old is the computer and did sound work before?
Or, did you just put in a new sound card?
Either way, you are now in the right place for drivers and troubleshooting.
Also, I am not sure what you mean by "when I try to open a sys. or drv. file it does not know what to do" .
Is the file extension (that's the xxxxx. doc or xxxxx. zip thingy) for your download xxxx.exe or xxxx.zip?
More info always helps and we will get to the bottom of this.
It was a hand-me down, I don't really know much about it, I'm no computer wiz. The sound worked before but someone just cleaned it all up and put this darn xp on it. It's a built-in sound card, I guess that means it's not a card. I went to the following site to try to find a driver it http://www.windowsxp-drivers.com/companies/19/222.htm. I'm not sure which one I'm supposed to use. All of them bring me to DriverGuide.com. i logged in, downloaded one of the zip files. Once it was on my computer it gave me 3 files --- an inf. and to sys. files the info one was fine and told me how to download it, the othjer 2 (.sys) nmy computer couldn't open because it didn't know what to open it with. All I want is sound!!

Alright!!
Now we are getting somewhere.
Is this a name brand PC?
If so, give us the maker and model number.
Also, as Doc says, go to Control Panel/System/hardware/Device Managere and tell us what you see under Sound.

When I right-click and go to update driver, I want the wizard to install from a list or specific location and include in my search the file where my .zip is which I put in My Documents. In the folder it shows a zipped folder with 4 things inside, a .txt, an inf., an 2 - .sys. When it tried to update the device, it still said it couldn't find anything. I f someone has checked out the site a wrote earlier, which one should I be downloading from the list?

Have ya got winzip? www.winzip.com
That will unzip the files and make them useable.

I thought I did, but I can't find it. I autimatically assumed I did because I could open the folder with the zipper and see the contents.

XP has a win unzipper - just double click the zipped file, on the left, click the link to extract and follow the wizard. It should default to putting the unzipped files in the same directory but in a new sub directory of the directory which has the original zip in.... I hope that makes sense!
Please don't use the drivers you have though, this is the correct site for your drivers http://www.cmedia.com.tw/e_dload1.htm - you will note there is no driver for xp for the 8330 - the 2k driver will be fine though.

That is ok.
Sounds like a compatible IBM clone.
So, now go to those quesion marks and right click and choose "update driver" and when it asks for the location, point it to your downloaded driver.
If it does not recoginize it as an appropriate driver, then you have downloaded the wrong one.
Let us know.
Doc can take it from here!!!
