He isn't in safe mode !!! else how did he manage to visit windows update ? modems, network cards etc don't work in that because as you quite correctly said earlier it doesn't load the drivers

Its pretty god damn easy to tell ... it says 'safe mode' on all four corners & you get a little message telling you that you are 'there' before you can do anything else !

What he needs to do is update his video driver ! that's what is restricting him to 16 colours, as at the moment my guess is that for video adapter he has a device 'standard vga'... to check open device manager, open the heading 'display adapters' - post what it says there please.

All the drivers for a fujitsu lifebook are here @fujitsu (pick your model) - once you've downloaaded & saved those you should be able to update your current 'default windows choice' to what actually is there but windows (whatever version it is) didn't recognise fully

Hopefully this'll fix up your usb issue too, your old hard drive had all this stuff on it - we just need to go get it again.

    PS
Michael, go to where confus-ed links to and download EVERY driver available for that laptop and store in a folder you name "Fujitsu Drivers" for easy access.
Still I wonder: it being MEeeek, why wouldn't the USB drivers load properly?
External USB CD's are supported natively in ME.
Something else may be amiss here, but lets do this one step at a time.
    And, welcome to WinDrivers.

ok, been playing around, downloaded display driver from fujitsu web site, still no joy, but on playing around this message came up.
display properties. at this time display properties are limited to trouble shooting change only. and it goes on to say that once you have restated successfully you will be able to change settings.
I hope from this someone may be able to help.
this is a lifebook B2031, and the adapter is NeoMagicGraph128XD.
    THANKS
    michael

I don't see that model number at their site.
Anyway, this usually means the driver didn't initialize properly.
Have you rebooted to see it works right?
If not, you may have to reinstall the driver.
Let us know and if that is a correct model (perhaps it is another country model #).

Windows may very well have got confus-ed ... depends just what you did with the downloaded driver.

What you needed to do was to open device manager & update the drivers of whatever it had decided was your video card.

I suspect you may now have two instances of a video controller present in device manager, have a look & tell us.

OK, here we go again ;-)display readings
adapter; standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
    monitor; Fujitsu 1554G+
    performance set at none
colour management; diamond Compatible 9300K G2.2

I have no idea if any of the above are correct, bar the monitor which I took off the Fujitsu web site.
I have tryed downloading most things from the windows web site with no joy.
What I now is a small screen which will not go up from 16 colour and 680x680. and as stated the laptop once said it was stuck in trouble shooting mode.
I have checked the device manage and nothing was double booked. The only ? was on a PCI Mulimede device which I have disabled
I hope this gives you some leads,
    michael
