Yep, West of England one. Thanks, that at least gives him an idea.

What's the deal with the trains then, can't you go on one site to check times and fares for anywhere in the UK?

Well actually where I live we don't have trains! My nearest station is 50 miles away so I don't really know much about it after privatisation. I had thought that Virgin trains came down to the south west so it may be worth checking that out too. Good luck!

That is crazy. What the hell happened to the train system since I left? Mind you I never remember it as being great but at least you could go to your British Rail station and book tickets for just about anywhere.

France may be crap at a lot of things (wars for instance ) but they have their rail system running pretty good. I just came up from Lyon to Paris this morning in 2 hours (600 kms / 350 miles) for less than £ 80.

The last time I took a train was about 4 years ago. From Crewe to Exeter. It was delayed for 2 hours, then broke down. Had to change at Birmingham where it was delayed for a further hour. Eventually got back 4.5 hours late. I spent 5 years living in Tokyo where you can just about set your watch by the arrival times of trains. Now I live in a rural area where trains just ain't!
