New board
I have a 2374 T40 and went through several hours of troubleshooting, some on my own scouring the Internet, some with IBM (very helpful, but no dice).
Neither my IPod nor my external hard drive (both new) were connecting at 2.0, kept getting that damn "hi-speed/non-hi-speed" message.
I finally reloaded my entire system, patched it to SP2 beta, updated the bios and controller program to the version released on 7/13, still getting 1.1 transfer speeds and the bubble message.
Just got off the phone, IBM is coming on 7/16 to install a new system board as the problem could not be resolved. I suggest that anyone else with a Thinkpad request the same since no company (IBM, Apple, Western Digital, Microsoft (!), etc...) is taking responsibility for the problem. At least IBM was easy to work with and did not balk at putting in a new board.
Good luck.

bios
I have a 2373G1U T40p and my usb devices are always recognized, but transfers only occur at 1.1 speeds. However, I am quite sure I had transfers at 2.0 speeds when I first purchased my laptop.
I too have reinstalled everything from the IBM service partition and applied all possible updates. They only thought I have to add is that maybe it is the newer bios that is the problem. I have always flashed my bios to the newest version. But the bios is the only thing that I can think of that is different on my laptop from when I purchased it.
Does anyone have this problem who is using the original bios that came with the T40p? I might try flashing to the original version of the embedded controller and bios to see if usb 2.0 starts working again.
Has anyone tried this?

Welcome to Windrivers dsb38 and graynu
Graynu, did a new system board solve the problem?
dsb38 if this is an intel based laptop, have you installed the intel inf driver?
url=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=822603]have either of you installed this patch?[/url] also check the file versions in that mskb against your system.

same problem
Hi,
I'm running xp home SP1, P4, MSI mobo. I'm having a similar problem with the Ipod. When i first installed the ipod (4g 40 gig) I used the 2.0 that came with the mobo. This worked fine for the first few days. Then it slowd down a lot. Then it completely stopped working.
I bought a new 2.0 card, installed the drivers, and installed two usb 2.0 patches for windows. It says new hardware found, then says device is working properly, then says mass storage device malfunctioned. This seems like a windows problem to me. I dont have any other usb 2.0 devices i can test on the card.
In device Manager, is usb2 supposed to show up as "enhanced root hub" or not. When i installed the card, it shows up as enhanced host controller, and added more root hubs, but no enhanced root hubs.
The computer is not online yet, when it is, I'll try Updating the Bios. For now, i'll just search for new drivers.
Its a shame somthing so simple as an Ipod can cause me such a headache!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!

I installed SP2, all possible udates, drivers, and other such things. Reinstalled ipod updater, and itunes.
I called Apple support again, and they said i did everything i can. They said to bring the Ipod to the Apple store near me, and have them test it out. Then they may give me a new cord, or repair the ipod. If all else fails, i'll get my money back, and buy some mp3 player that was built to run on a PC.
good luck to all others w/ this problem

installing XP SP 2 is actually what caused my problems in the first place. I have a 2737 QU1 T40 and a 160G LaCie drive. The combo worked fine for about two months before installing SP2, and now it won't work for two hours in a row. On boot, things are generally okay, but after some time it will drop the USB connection entirely, then redetect the drive and pop up the "Hi-Speed in a low-speed" message. Since I run VMWare from the drive, this causes major, major problems.
I have applied all relevant IBM updates, I have applied a LaCie firmware update, I have deleted and redetected all USB devices, I have disabled Windows power management of the USB ports, and none of it has done any good. I'm going to have to rebuild from scratch and hope that works.

I had a usb hub hooked up to one of my six usb ports and I kept getting the same message to use another high speed usb port. So I hooked up all my devices to my MB ports and got rid of the USB hub which was a USB 2.0 D-Link. I don't think the driver in it was a usb 2.0 because I hooked up a pci usb 2.0 card and the driver was not already on the cd drivers. I had to download it from the manufactures website. Now I've got too many USB's and I've lost some MB usb ports.

That is really interesting becasue I am having the same EXACT problem that all of you are having and it doesn't seem to have any resolution. I too have that same D-Link USB 2.0 Hub plugged in and I used it for a good 5 months before getting the USB 2.0 errors. Now it doesn't matter whether I remove the USB hub or not I cannot get any USB 2.0 Devices to connect at 2.0 speeds. I even reformated my computer and still nothing... any ideas?

T40 with Ipod mini - same problem
Hi all,
I am experiencing the EXACT same problem with my T40, using it with an Ipod Mini. Initially it recongized the ipod OK, but went to USB1.1 speed. Then inexplicably, it would no longer recognize the Ipod and would not charge it. I tried everything - updating the bios, downloading latest Intel chipset support, explicitly deleting & replacing USB drivers, and at one stage I thought it was something the Ipod installed and even editing the registry removing any reference to Ipod. I unistalled & reinstalled ipod software several times, including updates. I also verified it was not the ipod at fault as it synced with my desktop PC's USB2.0 hub without incident.
I found a 'fix' (though not elegant) that may get to the root of the problem. I find that if I DISABLE the Intel 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 enhanced controller in Windows Device manager, my ipod again syncs, albeit only at 1.1 speeds. But it charges again (whereas with that driver active it did not), and is recognized whereas previously it did not.
I suspect that the USB2.0 hardware is perhaps at fault (and it is switched off by disabling this driver), or the driver is faulty. Am going to set about finding a solution. If the driver is at fault, I have no idea where to find a better one as this is the one released with WinXP SP2. (Microsoft driver version 5.1.2600.0 dated 6/1/2002).

same problem - T40
I have an IBM Thinkpad T40 running Windows XP SP2. The problem showed up for me some time in January. Since it happened, I have completely restored my system to factory defaults (due to another problem with STOP errors halting my system that eventually devolved to a state of halting on boot-up). The USB problem still remains and occurs with both my Creative Zen Micro mp3 player and Sony Cybershot DSC-W1 camera. I have also tried connecting these devices with 4 different cables, of which I know at least 2 are rated for hi-speed usb.
I have also tried upgrading my usb drivers with the Intel INFINST tool mentioned earlier in this thread, also to no avail. I am wondering what kind of successes people had with getting their system boards replaced. Also, did IBM acknowledge for any of you that this is a known problem, or did they just replace the board as a last-ditch effort? I purchased my laptop about 2 years ago, so I don't know if it is still under warranty, but hopefully they'll replace it if that is the problem.
I (as well as everyone else here, I'd imagine) would greatly appreciate any feedback people can offer on what did/did not work for them.
Thank you
