If it works with dvd shrink then tmpgenc is the problem... have you been to the site to check for updates and patches?

oh no never even thought of that i just thouight it was the dvd writer. That was the thing also I just bought bought the drive and couldnt understand what was going on at all. So you think its the tmpgnc dvd authoring tool and the tmpgnc writer. Ok i'll have to try that tonight.

Can you conclude that ? I don't think you can ..
All these bits of writing software introduce their own drivers, or more correctly a filter class each & they are forever conflicting with each other 
What's doing the burning bit for dvdshrink ? (that just does the re-encoding bit & then passes the burning bit to some other program) - Nero ? Something else ? But I'm assuming you must have at least one other writing type product.
The general 'fix all' advice is to uninstall every single burning type application & then check with something like This very handy utility that they are all gone. (you can look now & see if you have any dupliactes as that's often an issue) & here you say ..
..also I just bought bought the drive ..
.. meaning it replaced another ? & you had burning software already present ? (any kind of burning s/w even for a CDR) .. if so defiinately take it all off & then add back one at a time, testing as you go.
