I have exactly the same drive and am getting near enough the same trouble, i think its the firmware, when i first installed the drive it came with TS03 FW, at that time the next upgrade was TS04 which i put on it and all was fine, yesterday i formatted the PC and reinstalled Win98 (yes i still use it!) The drive was fine so i put in a DVD data disc which i put all my backup files on, including the TS04 upgrade. Being silly i installed the FW from the DVD backup disc which was in the drive. This messed up the whole FW Upgrade and from then on the Drive wouldnt open or close! When looking at the drives properties in Device Manager, it said BOOT next to the description of FW. I then went and D/L'ed the latest FW for the drive which is now TS06. Everything looked fine and the drive opened and closed but whatever disc I put in it couldnt read at all, the light would flash a little but you could tell it wasnt properly trying to read the disc! I then reinstalled the TS04 FW thinking Win98 wasnt compatible with TS06 but still the drive doesnt read nothing at all! It was working perfectly until upgrading the FW! Can you Help?

Flashing firmware is always risky. If the drive is responding and if there is a dos version of the flash, unplug the hard drives and flash from the floppy drive only. If the flash is only windows based, run the flash in safe mode.
There is a disclaimer on most firmware upgrades, you toast it, it's your problem. Have you tried reading the data on the drive in dos? Will the dvd boot the win98 cd for you?
