Thanks very much. I downloaded the driver you suggested (per link below) into the ATI folder in "Programs" and restarted the computer. HOWEVER...
I still don't have any sound. I still see the ??? question marks next to "Other Devices / Multimedia Controller".
Is there something else I'm missing??
Please advise, and thanks very much for your assistance.
Best Regards,

1. Your sound has nothing to do with ATI. Driver should not be in ATI folder. It will just confuse things.
2. Did you run the downloaded file to install it?

The file is now correctly located in the Creative Labs folder. Yes, I did run the installation on this file, and did a restart.
However, the basic problem still exists; no sound, and the ??? still show under "Other Devices - Multimedia Controller" in the Device Manager.
What else can I be missing here; could there be a physical connection out of whack?
BELIEVE me, I DID have sound on this computer until a few months ago. Not sure what happened that "robbed" me of it.
Any other thoughts or ideas you have would be very appreciated.
Thanks again!!!!!!!

From a command prompt type: set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
Open device manager
Select View Hidden Devices
Delete the multimedia controller with the ?, as well as any creative or soundblaster devices listed under Sound, Video & Game controllers.
Uninstall all Creative software.
Reboot.
When the device is detected again, install the Creative driver

I followed your directions to the "Tee".
However, the problem recurs. Even after installing the driver, the items come back. Here's what the device manager lists AFTER I finish the process:
Sound, video and game controllers
-ATI WDM Rage Theatre Audio
-ATI WDM Rage Theatre Video
-ATI WDM Specialized MVD Codec
-ATI WDM Specialized PCD Codec
-ATI WDM TV Audio Crossbar
-Audio Codecs
-Creative Game Port (removed but it keeps coming back)
-Legacy Audio Drivers
-Legacy Video Capture Drivers
-Media Control Devices
-Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
-Video Codecs
The ??? still show again for Multimedia Controller.
Not sure what else you can suggest here... you've been very helpful but I suspect I may need a hands-on technician to look this over. I don't know what else needs to be done.
If you have any other thoughts please advise. Otherwise thanks VERY much for all your assistance here. You certainly helped me narrow the focus on the problem.

AS AN ADDENDUM...
For the items listed under "Sound, video and game controllers", I only deleted ones that referenced either "Creative" or "Soundblaster". I did NOT delete any others...
Also, even though the problem seems to persist, even after installation of the driver you suggested, I am now getting a "Found New Hardware Wizard" popup that wants me to install software for the multimedia controller...
not sure if these additional tidbits help, but thought I should mention them.
Thanks again,
Frank
