    Exclamation nvidia drivers problem

I am having unbelievable problems with my nvidia geforce 2mx400 card.I have tried lots of different drivers and all of them except one will crash my sustem.Because my pc is new i took it back to the store where they installed the v21.81 drivers for my card. The pc worked fine but it was not compatible with directX8(max payne wouldn't play)!I tried updating to the v21.83 which i downloaded from nvidia but my computer would restart by itself after installation(non stop restarting whenever it entered windows)! So now i am using even older drivers so everything will work ok!For now my problem is fixed, but i cant update my drivers. I also noticed that when the drivers are faulty(as in not compatible with directX8 or when they are the type that will carsh my system after a while),norton system works detects an error at my memory during a diagnostic test.I don't now in what way this is related to my problem(possibly some conflict)!Does nvidia have a problem when looking for new drivers or is something wrong with my card???I hope these question don't sound too silly to all you out there, but i am stiil in the process of learning all these things!!!

I had a similar problem with Norton System Works detecting memory problems so I disabled it and the problems went away, and so did Norton System Works. Your card is probably fine, disable Norton, try the 21.83 drivers from Nvidia, then let us know how things are.

Just wanted to note that I more or less agree with this. I however am running 12.81 version of the nVidia drivers in 2k and 98 on a dual boot system and both are DX8 and both run Max Payne. I would caution against the new drivers. The seem to screw with my other games and I had to go backward till I found a version that would run everything and that was 12.41.

I am not woried so much with norton system works finding a problem with my memory,as i am with the fact that i can't get 21.83 drivers to work on my system. When i install them my system keeps restarting by itself after it enters windows(that or it shows the blue error screen2-3times and then restarts. And the 21.81 version has the problem that i mentioned with directX!Do you mean that if i uninstall system works the drivers wont reset my system??If yes ill try that,if not, well then i hope you have some answer??Will tell you if system works is the problem though(just in case thats what you meant!!)

If I remember correctly the Nvidia drivers Larommi is referring to worked real well on most platforms and DX8. Norton System Works either works well or not at all in my case so I ditched it. It's really up to you in the end. You didn't mention O.S., motherboard, and chipset on motherboard, the restarting or reset problem could stem from chipset drivers or a conflict with another device. Sorry to go on and on but it has been a very long day.

This is the pc i own:Its an amd athlon thunderbird 1.2Ghz clock 266mhz ,the motherboard is an Asus A7V133-C and the chipset on it is VIA KT133A.The soundcard is a soundblaster 128 pci and my graphic card is the nvidia geforce 2MX400 64MB AGP R with tv out.The memory on my system is a 256 SDRAM DIMM 133Hz.I am working windows 98 second edition(plus). The harddrive is a 30 gb western digital. My worry is NOT with directX8 and NOT with norton system works(i will remove it from my system soon,i stiil need it at this point). What worries me is that i cant update my drivers.I mean my pc is working perfect now(no crashes, every game works)but i am using older drivers for this. What happens in six months from now or even worse in a year from now when my warranty for the pc is over and i want to update my drivers(either because some program needs new drivers or some game!!).I wont be able to update and i wont be able to return the damn system back. And i dont want to have to buy a new graphic card at that point(OR at this point, especially since i just bought the pc!!!). <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I dont know if you tried this but boot into safe mode and run MSConfig and uncheck start up. Make sure there is absolutly nothing in start up. Then remove your video adapter and reboot and reinstall. At this point try the game and different drivers.
With my crappy system and the fact that I have not had any problems I would suspect your Norton or another background application is causing your problems.

I would also see if a BIOS update is avalible from your Motherboard manufacturer and go into the BIOS and run the ether a Setup BIOS defaults or failsafe option.

Thanks guys!!Finally fixed problem.Managed to update to the latest 21.83 drivers from nvidia!Im not sure what the problem is,since i tried all solutions together.Maybe i should have tried them1at a time, but i was getting desperate.I uninstalled norton system works,Took everything out of startup through msconfig(should done that earlier, lots of garbage starting up!!),update my chipset's 4in1 drivers(while disableing dma and putting agp in standard mode) and finally i tried the new drivers. So now,not only does everything work fine, but it actually works much better than before. After everything i reenabled dma and put agp in turbo mode and then i reinstalled system works to see if that was the problem. So far it hasn't done anything so im not sure it was the cause. Thanks again!!
