Post IE wont go to certain websites

On my mom's computer for some reason it just stopped going to websites that she visists most often like Yahoo mail and half.com. When I ping the sites in a dos prompt it works fine but IE/Opera/Netscape won't go there. Says cannot find server. I have cleared the cache and that did not help.

    Any other ideas?

Try setting the IE Security lower.

Does this happen all the time?

Have you tried putting the actual iP address? half.com (66.135.196.50)

Go to Help | About in Internet Explorer and see if you have "encryption" installed. Secure web sites won't let you in if encryption isn't there. Just another idea...

Well the weird thing is she has always been able to go to the websites before. I don't believe anything has changed when this started happening but with my mom who knows. Sometimes she just starts pressing buttons and things blow up. :-)

I will give the direct number route a try. But if I go to a dos prompt and type ping www.half.com it works just fine. The security is set at medium where it has always been.

Have you checked for viruses, the W32/Hybris virus affects the WSOCK32.dll file in C:\Windows\System. If this is the case extract WSOCK32.dll from your Win98 CD to your system.

    Hope this works for you.

It shouldn't be a virus. I have Norton Anti-Virus installed but nothing is impossible. Will check it out. If this Wsock32.dll is the problem would I be able to still contact some websites and not others and be able to contact any website using ping through dos? I also went and typed in the half.com numeric address and half.com came up fine, just not when I type the alphabetic address. I am thinking there is something messed up with my setup and plan to call ATT tomorrow. I went to their website and according to it everything is setup correctly but obviously something isn't.

Wyckyd1 has already asked, is she able to navigate to other sites or does the problem seem to be only with a selected few?

You can rule AT&T out. Sounds more like some sites have been added to restricted sites in IE settings somehow. Since you are able to access the site using IP and the IE settings (trusted & restricted sites) are based on the DNS name typically. Plus this problem is only with some websites, not all. Give AT&T a call if you like but it sounds like an IE problem on the local machine. Virus is always possible as mentioned above. I use Norton AV and it's far from perfect.

Well, it isn't ATT because she got it somewhat working again by going through the ATT broadband homepage to yahoo mail. But she can't do it through Yahoo. Weird. I guess I will reformat her HD soon and install Win2k on it.
