Key code for Windows 98?
Greetings,
Is there any way to get the security key code from the registry in Windows 98? I am trying to re-install windows on a system. All the cab files were pre-installed (no media was provided).
Thank you,
Al

This is one of several Utilities available :<a href="http://www.bootdisk.com/dosfiles/diag.exe" target="_blank">DIAG.exe</a>

Start>Run and enter REGEDIT. Then enter 'ProductKey' without quotes under Edit>Find. It should give you the CD's original password .

thats your oem number, but like poseidon posted, it'll probably be easier to get the diag utility and run that

Um.. installed from CAB files or not, you still need to have a copy of your MS license agreement on paper, with a registration code. If you have been sold a PC without this, the onus is on you to chase this up.

My guess is the system came with a master "Restore CD". Even so, like EC says, you should have the license agreement on paper somewhere.

Not every license comes with a CD Key.

Thats pretty shady then, even if the PC didn't come with media but came with some kind of master restore disk, then a key should be provided. Because after you do the restore you still have to go through the OOBE which requires you to enter the CD-Key. If the key / license wasn't provided then I would be highly suspicious.

Any other installation of Windows 98, for home use will require its own CD key.

MSDN versions do not require a key.
*EDITED BY DAMNED ANGEL*
This is a universial that works on 90% of win98se.
The only ones I've seen it not work on are some OEM installs. Hope it helps.

Can someone mod that last post out, or Jester, please remove it.
Posting a key, for whatever reason, is plain dumb, and not in accordance with the guidelines here.
Take it down, end of story.

if you didn't recieve a license key with the system, you must go back to whoever sold it to you and make it their problem, otherwise, go buy a new retail copy of whatever os you need.
