unable to browse internet
I am currently working on a machine that will dial out fine. but when I try to bring up a web page it tells me that it is unable to find server. I have checked dns numbers and they match another computer that can view web pages. Scaned for viruses (none found). uninstall network settings and reinstalled them and even uninstalled the dial-up networking. when the computer is dialed out I can ping the dns #. but beyonded that nothing.
At this point I am out of ideas. any other ideas would be very helpful

Update modem driver, switch modem with known good one, plug in IP addy instead of FQDN. What ISP are u using? Do they have propietary software or do you just have a number? If it's software remove it and try getting just a number to dial.
Good luck.

I have had this before when the modem sits idle. On that occasion it was that the operating system had been started up using "selective startup". Click "start", "run", type "msconfig" and hit enter. Choose normal startup. OK it, shutdown, restart, and try that.
It sounds as if your machines pretty messed up and requires fdisked and formatted looking at your duel boot message.
Hope this helps!!

Geezer
Is the ISP using a proxy server?, suggest you ask the isp what all the dialup settings should be.

I am sorry I forgot to mention this before. Just was a little fustrated.

So e-mail the isp, or try some other isp for now with settings you know that work. Then at least you jknow where the problem is.

Make sure you can get to your dns servers (e.g. ping). Can you see and get on the internal network? If all settings are right and all software is installed correctly most likely it is the network card.
To each his/her own.

You can't ping the vast majority of DNS servers. They don't respond to pings. If you need to verify if your DNS server is working, contact the person/entity running it.

I had a similar problem like this a couple of years ago with 98se. After a couple of days of frustration I deleted and replaced the winsock32.dll in the systems dir. with the same file from my win CD. After a reboot it worked. I noticed someone said just have one copy or rename it, but have if you havn't tried deleting and replacing the winsock I would definitly try that... hope it helps ya!!

I seen this several times. Search for *sock*. Replace all files found in windows\system using sfc.
Delete these two registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\Servic es\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\Servic es\Winsock2
Indeterminism. There's nothing you can do about it.

if your still haveing problems rendering web pages go to microsofts web site ME has a bug in it that does the same thing it could be in the registry or you could try reinstalling windows over it self however remove some of the disk drive in the system device some timers windows will reload addtional drivers and this will cause more problems

Sorry I did not post what I landed up doing. The customer wanted their computer back so I landed up renaming the windows dir and reinstalled windows. The Customer was willing to reload his programs, and it fix all the problems that the computer was having. Thank you for all of your help.
