    Post disabling content advisor.

    Hi!!
    Need info ASAP please.
A friend of mine has a problem with disabling the built in content advisor of IE 5.0.
His son activated it and does not remember the password.
Every time they try to access any webpage, content advisor prevents them from doing so and asks for the password to bypass it.
If I try to disable the content advisor for them, it requires the unknown password. Any way to get around this without a reload??

His computer specs. A Dell PII 350 and windows 98 1st edition.
He uses dial up through a phone line with a usr modem.

    Thanks!!

I've done it before, but to be honest, I can't remember how to do it. If I were you, I'd call up Microsoft, and they'll help you out. There's no use in uninstalling Explorer, because it'll retain the registry keys.

Try this: open the registry and go down to the key

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Advanced INF Setup\IEContentAdvisor.Assoc

Look at the name that has the password as a vlue and delete it.

Don't forget to save the registry before you make any changes.

The official Microsoft knowledge base solution is to run regedit and go to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\Ratings

And delete the 'Ratings' key. Next, exit and reboot and you should be back in business.

I've had to do this a number of times. And just in case, lay off the kid. The activation of the Content Advisor Password was a known bug that happened outside of user error when upgrading systems from IE4 to IE5. It didn't happen every time but often enough that I memorized the path to fix it and have remembered it these several years since....

    Thumbs up

    Thanks everyone!!

Sowulo's tip helped. No more password.

P.S. Sowulo, I passed the message to the guy that this was a known bug with IE 4 and 5. So he won't blame his son for this.

    Thanks again!
