Conflicts with Display Adapter/Other headaches
HI,
Have a Dell Dimension XPS. This problem is creating major headaches. Machine is running Windows 95B.
Here is what is happening:
I can only boot Windows 95 upon 2 conditions.
1)Booting to Safe Mode
2)Disabling the Display Adapter (Display adapter is STB Velocity 128)
If I try to boot normal with Display Adapter enabled it just continually
reboots. I downloaded and installed the most updated driver.
Dell diagnostics passes all tests.
Couple of notes:
The following one troubles me the most because I can't remove the device and have Windows find it again:
If I try to remove the Display adapter via Device Manager I get the message
"YOu have a Device Category selected. Device categories cannot be removed.
Click plus sign next to Device category and select Device to be removed"
I assure you that I indeed do have the device highlighted but I still get
this message.
Also if I goto the properties of the Display adapter and goto the resources
Tab it indicates a conflict as follows:
"Memory range FD000000-FDFFFFFF used by PCI standard PCI to PCI bridge"
"Memory range F6000000-F6FFFFFF used by PCI standard PCI to PCI bridge"
The system will not allow me to manually Change these settings in the
properties of the Display adapter or in the properties of PCI to PCI bridge.
IF I attempt to do this the system immediately shuts down reboots and then
gives me a Windows was not shut down properly error. After the scan it
attempts a fix which i do choose fix and then Save the fix. Then the
setting in both the Adapter and PCI to PCI bridge go back to Automatic
settings leaving me with the same problem of Windows only booting in Safe
mode or when I disable the Display adapter.
Also there is a Yellow Exclamation by the mouse now (this just started happening and I didn't touch any settings on the mouse). As I said I cannot remove the device because of the problem mentioned above.
Any ideas on what I can do to fix this problem or what could be happening
would be oh so greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dani
PS As far as the magic question of whether Hardware or Software was added
prior to this problem I can only say this is not my computer and as far as I
know NO.

- You could have a virus. Otherwise sounds like a hardware conflict or failure.
- Have you tried a different video card?(maybe with different one installed you can boot into safe mode and remove the STB drivers).
- Can you switch mouse types (Ps2 to serial or visa versa) or use different serial port?
- Does the same thing happen with other cards removed.

1> Uninstall the Video driver or change to the default VGA driver. Do not reinstall the driver, even if prompted after re-boot. Just leave it as a standard VGA driver.
2> Reinstall your system drivers i.e. the chipset drivers (intel, VIA or whatever motherboard you have). Make sure that they are properly installed after re-boot (check the Device manager).
3> Install the USB drivers (found on the Win95/98 CD under 'Other' > 'USB') Make sure that they are properly installed after re-boot (check the Device manager).
4> Now, re-install your Graphics driver.
