Unhappy Cannot load Windows 98 successfully

Just built a new PC. I have the following:
    - FIC AZ-11 Motherboard
    - AMD Duron 800Mhz
    - 128Mb RAM
    - 40Gb Maxtor HDD (5400 rpm)
    - BTC 52x CDROM

I’ve used the MAX BLAST plus software (v. 1.27S) that came with the HDD to set it up. I partitioned it into 4 equal partitions. The software asked that I place a start-up disk for DOS, or Win 9x/Me into A.
I did so, as I happened to have a Win 98 start-up disk. To re-start the PC I needed to keep the start-up disk in. No problem and I boot with CD-ROM support. I place my Win 98 CD in the CD-ROM, select the drive and type setup. Now is where the fun comes in. Sometimes it freezes up just after clicking continue on the “Welcome” screen. Other times, I’ve gotten as far as in “Copying Windows 98 files to your computer” and after about 26%, 46%, etc., (the percentage number has been random); or even fully loading, then about 9 minutes away from finalizing the Setup, the system just locks up and I have to start all over again.
I’ll get an error message to run Scanreg. When I do, it says that “Windows found an error in your system files and was unable to fix the problem. Try deleing some files to free up disk space on your Windows drive. If that doesn’t work, then you will need to install Windows to a new directory”. I do not think the problem is disk space.
I’ve also experienced completely loading Win 98 and having it freeze in the middle of things without warning and no other programs loaded.

    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just wondering if you have formatted the drive before each attampt to install. If not do another
    fdisk/ mbr
    fdisk
    Format
    install.
Sounds like a bad Drive but you say it's new?

I don't know your software your taking about but that could be the prob.
or You just might have a bad windows CD
I hope that someday we will be able to put away our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

I'd format the the C: partition again. Now that I think about it, I guess it could be a CDROM prob.

After formatting, create a c:\windows\options\cabs directory on the C: and then copy everything in the Win98 directory of the CD to that cabs directory.

Reboot without enabling CDROM support, go to c:\windows\options\cabs and run setup.exe

    Best of luck!

My suggestion would be to lose the MaxBlast software, since it looks like your motherboard and OS both support large drives. Use FDISK to remove the partitions that Maxblast made, and make new ones. Use FDISK /MBR to remove Maxblast from the Boot sector (Master Boot Record.) Format and copy CAB files to C:, then retry your install.

Try Windows Vista, the CE.ME.NT eXPerience...

Remove the MaxBlast overlay, you might be able to remove MaxBlast from thier boot disk...

Set Bios to boot from cd-rom, you might have to fdisk /mbr, and than format c: /s /u, set partion as you want (1=100% / 2=50% /4=25%)

Be sure to reboot between fdisk and format.

    Good luck!!!!! <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
