[RESOLVED] Lost CDROM icon
After swapping out broken CDROM drive, have no icon for it. Device Mgr. shows it as functioning. Delete and reboot doesn't help. Emergency diskette boot in CDROM mode allows me to read from it.
Is there a simple recovery for this? Is this a FAQ?

Check the settings in device manager and see what drive letter is being assignged to it, then check and see if you can access it trough as DOS box....also check config.sys for lastdrive= settings.

Drive shows in Hardware Mgr. as E:, as it should. It is not accessable through W98's MS-DOS. Perhaps the new drive is not DMA??

Check your IDE controllers in Device Manager, make sure that the Secondary (if thats where the CDROM is located) is functioning ok and has no exclamation mark next to it and that it actually exists. Also, go into Autoexec.bat and Config.sys and add the word REM in front of any cd device driver lines which may have been left by the old CDROM DOS install program.

Fixed it. There is a tip hidden in the Windows database. Apparently W98 has a problem on occasion assigning resources to DMA devices. The workaround is to uncheck automatic assignment by Windows in the hardware profile for the IDE controller being used, then select a different address range and reboot (only one address range can be adjusted.)
