    Post How can I get the key code from a dos prompt?

    Anyone know how to get the windows cd key code from a dos prompt? I cant boot windows, but i have an update cd and its asking for the key code. But i cant get into windows to get the original one! Any help?

    There is a small DOS app called DIAG that is available from <a href="http://www.bootdisk.com" target="_blank">www.bootdisk.com</a> that will tell you that and more.

    you can either edit the system.1st in the root dir (c:\) or system.dat in the windows dir. from there, search fot productid (win95) or productkey(win98).

    If anyone knows where to find this info in 2k or xp I would love to know since I still havn't been able to find it.

    Actually the best place to get it from is the back of your CD Case...

    type the following regedit /e filename.txt

    open the txt into a text editor and serach for "productkey" and it will be there.

    you may need to use extra switches with the regedit if your booting of a floppy
