    Resolved [RESOLVED] Computer Freezing

Bought Packard Bell Platinum 500 mhz, Intel III, 128 meg RAM and Windows 98 preloaded. Freezes continually when playing Solitaire or Freecell and sometimes when on Internet. Can anyone advise on how to fix?

    Question

When you say it freezes do you mean screen activity stops for a second and then restarts? Or does it lock up and you have to reboot? Freezes are probably due to heavy CPU activity. Since solitare would not do that you may have something running in the background. Are you muti-tasking when this happens? You can also go to Start/Run and type msconfig to see what is loaded. All you need is Explorer and Systray. Eliminate the others one at a time to find the offending program. Would help if we knew what other programs you have installed. Good luck.

Packard Bells are not even sold in the US anymore... they used to account for 70% of our repairs and they were selling used components in their "new" systems...

if you can't return it for another brand try this:

when it freezes, can you hit ctrl+alt+del? if so, are there any programs labeled "not repsonding"? if so what are they? Let us know and we'll be able to help better...

Here is another alternative. Possibly the programs you're running.. Freecell, and Solitaire are corrupt. Try going to:
start /settings / control panels / add remove programs go to windows setup. click on accessories and games. Remove Solitaire and Freecell, then reboot and re-add them at the same spot.

It's not impossible for new software to be corrupt. You may also want to try a scandisk on surface scan, see if anything is wrong with some HD sectors.

As far as your Internet goes. I think the reply before me has a point. Do a CTRL ALT DEL and let us know what isn't responding. We could better diagnose the problem if we knew where to start the search.
    Good luck!
