Stop me from throwing this stupid PC out of the Window
Have been attempting, on good advice, to use the randish partition manager to chose between win98se and dos6.2 on different hard disks.
Whilst randish has installed quite happily on the master drive, along with win98se I thought I was nearly done, only having to install DOS 6.2 on the second drive for the task to be complete.
Of course, how foolish those thoughts were. Tried to install DOS6.2 but it kept seeing the fact that there was a non-dos partition on drive C and kept prompting me to remove it, rather than install on the fat16 formatted drive d.
So I removed drive c from the system altogether and it installed quite happily to the second drive, and was working quite happily. Put the original drive back in, fire it up to the randish menu. Select Drive 2 Dos and it comes up with Non-System Disk.
Can I throw it out of the window now? or has anyone any suggestions to make?

yeah, was set active. Like i said, when it was the only drive in the machine it was booting quite happily from it, it was only on reintroducing the master disk with the randish manager on it that it cocked up.

Seems like the problem is with DOS6.22 being FAT32 un-aware, but whether it's the way the boot manager handles things & a different manager would be OK, or if DOS6 just can't work that way, I couldn't say.
Have you tried a DOS7 install on the second drive? The DOS games should be happy enough, although it might be a fiddle to get enough memory for some, DOS7 is a bit fat. My recollection is fuzzy, but I think DOS7 has one or two potentially useful enhancements anyway.

As far as I knew, DOS 7 was merely the dos layer that was installed as part of Windows 95 and 98. Since the point of the exercise was to have a windowless operating system on the second drive (for space reasons more than anything) I don't know how that would be possible.
Whilst I can see how DOS6.2 could get upset a non-dos partition on drive C, I thought the general idea of the randish manager was that it was supposed to ignore the drive c when booting from drive D.
If you know of any other freeware partition managers that I can use to achieve the goal, let me know. My mind they should have included such an item in Windows 98 in the first place.

DOS7 is a full, FAT32 aware implementation of MS-DOS which accompanies Win9x, from W95 OSR2 on, and is used to boot Windows, or to boot to a DOS prompt. If you format a drive with /S, or SYS an existing drive from a Win 9x DOS prompt, that drive will use DOS7 boot code and command processor, which is FAT32 aware. HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE are in the Windows folder, the rest of the DOS utility files are in Windows\Command.
There's a link in this topic that could be useful too: http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin...&f=11&t=003183
