Game problems

Whenever I load a 3D game(2d games work fine) like half life it goes into the game for a few seconds and everything is fine and then BAM! it locks up. I tried reinstalling the video card drivers and i have the latest ones. I have a RADEON btw. the card is firmly seated and I tried to take down the graphics acceleration to one notch next to none and the computer would lock up when trying to load windows. Please help it has not been a good day for me. <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">

Take the Video Acceleration all the way down, reboot and retry. Also, do you have the latest DirectX installed?

just a sugestion this may or maynot fix it but but make sure you have latest drivers, or while in windows hit cntrl,alt,delet to make sure you dont have alot of backgroun programs running, makes resources go low and locks up the game, happened to me.
also i have encountered when i play some games that run off of the CD and the cd is dirty or scratched that causes my game to freeze.

WHAT system do you have is it AMD?List system specs.

That sounds like a heat issue or power supply.

List system,also list recient changes made like software or hard ware.

Actually , what was your previous video card,you may have a driver conflict as well.Open GL drivers can be buggy if from 2 manufactures.......Go in to safe mode and then device manager and view your display adaper , you will see the previous cards you have ever installed.Remove the old one if there and reboot.You may have to reinstall your new card drivers now.

What Radeon card do you have and what driver version are you running? I've found that some of the latest beta drivers are quite buggy. I'm currently running the 7115 special purpose drivers off of ATI's website. I find they give me the best performance. Also, what version of Windows and what are your system specs? If you are running a VIA based mainboard, the Radeon has issues with this. If via based, download the latest 4in1 drivers http://www.viatech.com/download/drivers/4in1432v.zip search for atigart.exe on your PC, rename it to something like atigart.bak and then install the VIA drivers and reboot. There is a compatibility issue between the ATI and VIA AGP gart driver.

do a clean&fresh install of the game and download&install the latest patch for the game... and try to play using Software mode!

Im almost positive that this is a driver issue. I had the same problem with HalfLife as well as UT...exactly the same. I was useing a Stealth3 32MB and the Metal drivers that came out with that card originally werent too good. I went out and got some updated drivers and tweaked em a bit and the problem disappeared. maybe you tried it already but I would say do that before anything more drastic.

Ok my system is custom built:

650mhz Athlon
128MB RAM
ATI Radeon PCI version
Elements KX-133 mobo
15.0 GB HD
40x cd-rom
DVD-ROM
CD-RW

Hope this helps I'll try everyone elses suggestions too. The VIA thing sounds good but if the conflict is with the AGP that isn't the problem considering that the card isn't using the AGP slot.

I was having the same problem, games locking up,closing to desktop. It turned out to be my RAM. I didn't have any problems with anything else just games. Just another thought?

My friend had a problem like that. Here's my solution. First try to update to the latest DirectX drivers. (DX 8.0A)

Second, try to disable the AGP Acceleration in the DirectX parameters. (Start, Run, dxdiag)

Finnaly, try to take off the card, reboot and put it back again.

I have this problem on Half Life all the time, setting up network games, etc. Run the game and go to the configuration/video/video modes. Set it on the lowest resolution in software mode, then see if the game runs. If it doesn't, it's either a DirectX or a memory problem. If it does work, up the res until it stops working. That should show you the max you can go on that card with that amount of RAM.
