Resolved [RESOLVED] How much memory can windows 98 SE address?

I've got a system here that when you put 1.5GB RAM in it, it fails to load windows, saying there isn't enough memory to load. It worked fine with 1.0GB RAM. Is there a memory limitation in WIN 98 SE that I should know about?

    Thanks Much

I guess I should have mentioned that the BIOS sees 1.5GB ram just fine, I don't think it's a hardware issue. I just need some concrete evidence that windows 98 won't see that much memory, and therefore recommend an upgraded OS to the customer. Thanks.

    Cool

There is an article on the MS Knowledge Base the can give some insight into this; Article Q253912 Talks about the "out of memory" error with large amounts of RAM installed, large amounts according to the article is anything over 512.

    Cool

Windows 98 was never designed to allocate so much ram that is what NT/2000/XP is for.

Thanks so much, now I have some evidence for the customer, and even a workaround I can try.

Win 9x/ME wasn't designed with so much memory in mind, and while it theoretically should be able to use more, 1.5G will cause the problems you have had. Between 512M & there, the VCache workaround may still be needed with some configurations.

" Memory configurations for Windows ME with 1GB or more require adjusting the Vcache settings as outlined by Microsoft article Q108079. Currently Windows 98 has a memory limitation of 1GB max using the Vcache settings outlined by Microsoft. "

I found this quote at crucial memories website.
