Post 20gig hd 64 ram out of memory error?

hi maybe someone can confirm this.
I'm geting an out of memory error when i try to run scandisk or defrag on a costomers computer.I think its because the hd is a 20 gig WD installed with an 8 k cluster size.
i was just wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem and fixed it..?

Out of memory...that sounds like it may be RAM. Check your swap file settings.

If you want a smaller cluster size, get Partition Magic. Maybe that will fix the problem.

The specs you listed say Micron 133Mhz. If so, the BIOS more than likely doesn't support that large a HD without partioning or without installing a drive overlay. See this Microsoft KB article.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!

Go to the Western Digital Harddrive webpage and download their harddrive tools...It can diagnose, repair, partition, and format your drive in record time! additionally, it can test your BIOS and determine if you will need an overlay and can usually install that too!

The long way is to use FDISK and an undocumented feature in FORMAT...

You've got the right idea OEM, this usually happens if drive was loaded from an image. If you can get your hands on a copy of partition magic you can resize the clusters to 16 or 32k. It's worked for me a few times now.

I dont care what kind of motherboard it is if it can support a pentium 3 733 it isnt going to need overlay software for a 20 gb hard drive!

That would be the 133FSB 64Mb RAM....

I don`t know sounds a bit wierd to me.

Scandisk could be giving an out of memory error cause it needs some base memory. Go to a DOS prompt and type mem. You should see how much base memory of the 640K is free. To free this up remove 16bit drivers that use this memory area or instruct DOS and other programs to use the upper memory space.

I will confirm I have also seen this error message when the cluster size was not optimal, and that correcting it fixed the problem.

I think the problem is the cluster size. Any drive larger than 16GB should use a 16KB cluster size. Partiton Magic will allow you to resize clusters. I'm sure there are other, but PM is the only one I'm familiar with.

it might be the Cluster size ..

I have about 3000 computers in a similar config to yours..

    my tips :

    1. upgrade to the latest BIOS version.

    http://developer.intel.com/design/mo...ea/ea_bios.htm

    2. use the laatest drivers (Piix, Video)

    3. Disable Power management..

    4. make sure you board is revision 207 or above (on the barcode sticker on the Mobo) is not - consider RMA ing it..

    5. Use this Util to test your RAM http://www.tweakfiles.com/diagnostic/docmemory.html

    Hope it helps
