Reg problems
I'm not sure if this is down to the reg or win98 but i'll explain anyway.
Right, I've done a fresh install of win98se and then loaded on the via4in1 drivers and then the drivers for the video card, sound and modem. It all installs and works great. I can restart it and shut it down all day long. But if it's left over night windows seams to have lost all the drivers for everything. I think this could be due to a reg error. If i then reinstall the drivers again every thing works ok untill it's left again. I've formatted, repartioned and put windows back on etc... untill the cows come home but it does the same thing over and over again. Could it be a virus thats done something to the motherboard? What could cause windows to lose it's reg settings?
Anyone seen anything like this before?

When you say "left over night" are you talking on or off? If its off, I would think it would be hardware related. Bad battery messed with the MB and possibly corrupting your reg *maybe*? If its when you are leaving it on, I would look more towards software or a virus.

It's left over night with the power off. Turn it on in the morning and theres no Drivers for anything. Could a faulty batt cause reg problems?
Is the windows reg just one file on the system?

Not a bad battery in itself but it could possible be shorting something on the board.
I'm really just guessing at this point. I would really put it down as a hardware issue and more specifically a residual memory issue, due to the fact you said you could restart it with no problems. You might try just pulling the battery and see if it still does it.
Are you losing any of your BIOS settings after it sits over night? Try unplugging your comp from the wall and let it sit and then see if you have lost your BIOS settings. If that happens, I would really look at the MB for being the root of your problems.

It sounds like your ESCD is corrupt, or the CMOS battery which also saves the ESCD is dying. Try setting your BIOS setting "PNP OS?" to NO and see if that helps.
