Question Strange, I can browse, but can not ping!

I am trying to set up ICQ groupware and it does not work. I am trying to ping the server where it is loaded, but I do not get anything back. I can browse its files, but I can not ping.

Also, I can not ping my own mechine from the server. My mechine can ping others on the network.

    Strange, any ideas? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

um....what are you talking about here? You can physically go to another machine and not ping yours, but you can ping the other machine from your machine? Are you on the same network?

What does this have to do with ICQ? Use Windows Messenger...ICQ is made by AOL script monkeys!

Installing ICQ is what led me to the problem.

The problem is this: I am on a network, a file server is also on the same network, I can browse the file server, but I can not ping the file server (weird huh!). The network is TCP/IP by the way.

Also, if I go to the file server and try to ping out, it does not work. No matter what PC on the network I ping, it does not work. Also the guy who set it up said that he did not do anything special that would not allow a ping on that server.

    A couple of thoughts.

Have you got a firewall or another peice of network hardware that is blocking specific tcp/ip ports because it could be blocking pings for security reasons.

Are you sure you have the ip addresses correct on both machines go to a dos prompt and type the following.
net view \\servername (should confirm that you can see the shares on the server)
ping \\servername (this should give you the correct ip address)
ping ipaddress (should confirm what you are saying is correct)

Check the subnet mask is the same on both machines because that can do weird things like this if it is different.
