Computer wont boot
Well, couple of weeks ago I purchesed a 150 mhz old computer from my work, it has a 500 mb scsi drive with adaptec scsi card, came with a matrox mellinium g400, and a 3com nic card. Well I take it home clean it up and installed slackware 7.1 on it. It went very smoothly.
Now I had my brothers friend come into my room and ask me how much did my new system cost and I told him it was only $50. He was like $50 "can you get me one?" I said will do you have $50? (unemployeed) he said I can get the money. Will two days later he calls me up and says ill be over to give you th money so you can get me a computer from your work. I was like ok sounds good. Any ways for 3 hours at work I picked out the best computer troubled shooted it, cleaned up and got it running perfectly with windows 3.1.
Now I go home that night and I stop by my brothers friends house and I drop off his new system. Now 1 week goes by and he calls me up saying my computer wont boot. I said will fix it then. He replys that he has been working on it for 2 days and cant get it working.
I go over to his house and I turn on the computer, yup doesnt boot. Will I then looked around and see a cpu and some memory next to the machine. I asked him where he got the cpu and ram. He told me it was from this computer. "I was like wtf!" So I look inside and he stuck a 450MHz cpu and 64mb sdram on the board. (now the baord can only support dimm non-edo and 150mhz max) I asked him why did you put that ram and cpu in the computer, he said to make it faster, oh and it did work. (work! yeah before it blew) any ways i switch everything out and got it to boot again, thats the good thing. Bad thing is that it blew the controller board. He asked me what he could do, I told him to buy a new controller baord. Well other than that it was fine.
Humm what book to buy "Computer Howto for shmucks!"

Do you leak any fluids, do you have any bumps on your rear, do you have any unpleasant odors?
If you answered yes to any of these then you are not qualified to own a new AMD ATHLON XP.
If someone ask you if you are running the all-new fastest AMD ATHLON XP, just turn around and reply "WHY YES, AND ITS CERTIFIED"

This is why I no longer "hook people up" with cheap used machines. I got tired of spending so many hours on the phone supporting the junkers that it ceased to be profitable. Now I tell them to either spend the money and buy a custom-built PC with new parts under warranty or go cheap and buy a Compaq or Emachines with 3 years of MSN for like $100. If they want support and I can see that they are going to need lots of it, I tell them to spend a few more bucks and buy a Dell or Gateway. Not the best machines around but the support is pretty good.
I find that even if you tell you friend that the used machine is sold as-is, they still expect you to support it for the rest of their natural lives. I am all in favor of helping out your friends, but they should return that kindness by not constantly nagging you about tiny problems when they knew going in that the machine would have a few problems.

I put an old system together for a friend's mother and decided I would nip this in the bud and have fun doing it.
I constantly nag her!
How's that pc?
Thinking about any new software? Better email me and ask first
Gonna get a scanner? remember you have no USB connections
When you get a printer remember to invite my girl and me out and I will install it for you.
How's your daughter? Is her baby ok?
Here's some interesting sites on the web to go to. (Sent her to ebay, iwon, and the new york times)
Have you defragged lately? ran Scandisk?
By the way did I tell you about the game I bought the other day............................................... .................................................. ...................................
I am pretty sure she thinks I am insane <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">
I am equally sure she will only call me if it is important.
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind. Well, the WINDrivers forum anyway.
