Cool One of those days

I was workng away quite happily today when my phone rings. I've noticed that every time this grey box on my desk rings my day can suddenly turn very nasty. This was going to be one of the calls.
One of my users was complaining that she was unable to dial in from home. She was getting a no dial tone message on the screen. So I asked her the usually questions like is it plugged in, drivers OK etc etc. All of which turns out to be yes.
I ask her to plug a telephone into the 2nd line and see if theres a dial tone. She told me she had already done that and it was dead. I explain to her she had a possible line fault and it wasnt my problem as this line was installed by the telephone company and the rental is payed by the end user. Now she asked me if I could fix the problem with the telephone line. Again I told her the telephone line is not my area I am NOT allowed near it and told her to call the line provider up and report a fault.

Still not good enough for this user. She then started saying I shouldnt work in computers if I cant help a user fix a simple line fault. I told her it wasnt my problem and if she had a problem about me or anything I have said to her to go and phone my boss who WILL tell you exactly the same thing I have just said.

Just beause I work with computers and just happen to look after the telephones on site does not mean I have got access to the Telephone companies exchange to go in tracing line faults cause some tells me too.

Hope tomorrow is a bit better

My phone is a neverending source of problems for me. Rarely does it ring and someone just wants to chat...it is always a five alarm emergency.

I have a dumb vendor calling me...and left a voice message...but I didn't call right back today so she called me up again and talked to everyone in my section TELLING them to have me call her. LOL! Yeah watch how fast I pick up the phone!

Stupid people.

Voice mail is the only reason I get work done somedays. Without, I would be on the phone all day explaning to customers that their machine is not fixed yet because I am on the phone with them instead of working.

Cool

"One of these days, I'm gonna smash you into little pieces..."

- Pink Floyd.

This is appriate as I have had a (sarcasim mode) Great day. Started at 9 am presenting an hour training session that lasted 90 minutes ???

Got back to my desk to discover some MAD, F***king fool has the SirCam worm. I mean, we've been warning them not to open attachments without checking/scanning for viruses, but NO. Go on just click away as per usual.

Next, another member from the Office (who uses computers more than we do, but still cannot get it) another virus problem, quick bit of diplomacy while our Admin banged his head off the desk in frustration....muttering, I'm gonna kill 'em, take away their PC's and Kill 'em.

Anyway, my carm, diplomatic attitude worked. (I do try to be nice sometimes).

Right, next contestant please.....

User: excuse me, but my PC keeps crashing...
Me: Good, when does it crash???
User: Oh, errm. When it loads windows, I have it set to automatically run IE, but I had this virus see.....
Admin: NO, put the gun down....Thats it you don't want to hurt anyone, now deep breaths...thats it...It might be a good time for you to take your lunch now....

RANT OVER........I'm now perfectly calm, but off Virus duties..
Good day to be alive, sir
Good day to be alive he says, yeah

Ever notice how us techs never get happy, you did a good job calls, or let's gt some lunch calls. It's always problems, all the time. Kinda gets to ya after awhile. I can see it now, 10 years from now, tech therapy. Also notice how old friends suddenly pop up and want to hang out again, as long as you have time to check a minor problem their having.

AHHAHAHHAHAHA

this is true, preech on.

Well I had a problem with a customer, where they bought 27 computers from my company and they went to some school. This school wrote drivers and tested hardware in windows NT. Well I get a call from one of the students about why wont NT boot? I asked her what she did before it started not to boot. She said we installed a NIC card. Will can I haveyou take out the NIC card and see if it will boot, She said I already did that and it works fine. "Mouth drops, grr"

Will I told thats your problem then she was all no its not. I repleyed its not?? How is that? It worked fine until you put the NIC card in, why dont you call the manifacture you bought the NIC from? She said its not the nic its the computer hardware. Hummm...

Thinking to my self and just woundering what to do so I asked her if she installed SP 6a for windows NT she said no. So I told her to download it and install it and see if that clears it up. Thing is NEVER GIVE OUT YOU NAME UNLESS THEY ASK

She calls me up again next day and she was yelling up the a storm. And she refuses to call the manifacture who makes the NIC card, the nic card never came from us. So she had all the systems returned and that was the end

This was a year ago. So I think that was my worst Tech experiance.

I've gotten an e-mail sent to my bos for the help I gave. The user was very happy. The problem was so simple to fix that somebody else forgot to check it.

Of course, I've had a few other's back stab me in similar fashion. Luckily, my boss checks the situation out first before coming to any conclusions. After checking the work performed, there are usually so many inconsistencies that the complaining user ends up looking like they are wearing diapers and need a pacifier.
God is all knowing, I am just human.

I work for managers who expect me to be the network admin (3 Novell file server and 2 domains), hardware break-fix tech, software/apps tech, apps developer, PC moves & new PC setup tech, and info security for 250+ users and machines.

I try to explain that I am really doing 6 different jobs and that is the reason for my 60 hour work-weeks. They come back with "Well, we really don't understand all that techie stuff so we just leave it all to you." I am sick of working for and with people who are completely clueless. I work for one of the largest companies in the world and I am convinced that many of the people I work with would not be able to hold down a job anywhere else. They are so incompetent it is like working in the education system or the government.

Ok. I'm going to hit you in the head with a bat. You may feel some pain but its not because I hit you in the head with a bat. Its because you had a problem with your head's hardware.
I know enough to know that there is alot that I don't know.
