I have to say, I disagree with all of this.

    Not everyone is a geek.

Some people buy their first computer expecting it to do WHAT all the fancy advertising says it will. Easy web, word processing, etc...

They buy it as a APPLIANCE to perform tasks they are led to believe are easy to perform. They don't care about learning. It is an appliance to them. Push a button, do a job.

    Then they learn the truth.

If you want to dis someone, dis the manufacturers who advertise computers as non-complex devices that will magically turn your world into a better, easier place to be just to get the next Mom & Pop to spring for their first machine.

Who knows.. maybe the person got screwed on an online scam before where some dirty old man is selling 1/2 computers, we never know.

If the person wasn't trying to learn they wouldn't know what the hell a motherboard is.. let alone ask if one was in there.

Its easy for other people to say they know a little bit of everything, until they hit an area that they don't know.

I can see how some people can expect people to know what they are operating, and I think this person established that they infact know the parts, they were making sure they were all there. We all have air headed moments, some more than others, its not necessarily fair to pick on a person for being leary of an online ordering form.

There .. you got my ramblings.

I'll have to agree somewhat with this one. We do have unscrupulous manufacturers and well as a "push-button" society. Again, ignorance and/or stupidity is the real problem.

I have to agree that the problem is caused by a number of causes, including the disinclination of the average person to learn about the "desktop computer". I don't even want to go into the manufacturers who did and do sell inferior parts assembled in a most unsatisfactory way. I am referring to manufacturere who include marginal 200 W power supplies and inferior hard drives such as the one which rymes with jujitsu. The infamous machines with the P------ B--- brand name. I try to explain that a custom built machine designed to do what you want it to do, built with first class parts is a much greater bargin in the long run. Alas, it seems that I am a lonely, unheard voice in the wilderness! Please overlook the typos, I lost a bit of coordination when I had brain surgery. I can, however, say with certainty that I do in fact have a brain, as it has seen the light of day.

I can remember back when I was a motorcyle mechanic. I had some guy come in and want me to adjust his chain. This guy was blatantly stupid and shouldn't own a bike if he couldn't adjust his own chain. Then he handed me $20 and I tightened the chain.....nuf said

Heck, If they hand you the money to do the job and don't interfere or bitch why complain about how stupid they are or appear to be. I would have loved to have had more customers like this.

We had sold Norton AV 2001 with the system and lo and behold NAV 2001 was removed and MCAffee from 1997 was installed. Aparently the user has a neighbor that "knows" about computers. We reformated her computer and for about three months she was very happy. Then, we got a the call. It seems that her computer had problems again. We got the computer in and guess what? The exact same viruses on the computer and the exact same MCAffee from 1997 on the computer. This time the expert neighbor came in also. We told the expert neighbor and the lady about what the problem was and how to prevent it. We got the usual feigning nod of acknowledgment and sent them on their way. I have no idea if the same problem reoccurred because I got tired of the place and quit about a month later.

Sorry about the old lady, the stupid neighbor, me quitting, or the poor computer?

I actually quit doing anything computer related for a job eight months ago. I got very tired of the loads and loads of idiots, morons, dimwits, and crabby, thick-headed, so-called computer users out there. I could rant for page after page of what I think of many computer users, but I won't. It's hard for me to believe that someone like myself who didn't know much about computers other than turning them on six years ago, can go on and be pretty dang good with them now. Contrast that with the folks I had to deal with that have used computers for several years and still can't find the "start" button or the "any" key.

I will continue to do computer work for friends and family members. This amounts to about a total of 5 people.

I have a great policy, computers are dropped off with a note saying what they are/aren't doing, or what the owner wants them to do. They are then collected 2 days later doing that, and the bill paid.

What do you do about customers that state on the invoice (note) what their computer is doing wrong, you fix it, they take it home, and then they proceed to call back complaining that you didn't fix some problem that obviously you had to read their mind to figure out, even though you fixed the problems listed on the note?

I'd tell em to go ahead and bring it back in, I'll be more than happy to fix it for the usual fee, as the problem wasn't noted on the trouble ticket. Before they get there, conspicuously post a policy stating that only those problems listed on the trouble ticket will be addressed, just for safety's sake.

I feel I have to report a new stupid user, and this happened before he purchased the PC!!

My neighbour is also a friend from way back, and knows nothing about PC's, NOTHING! Fair enough, we all have to start somewhere. He purchased one 2 days after Christmas and told me to come and look at it yesterday. It transpired that he had asked his father in law for advice, and was a bit too embarrased to come and ask me for advice on his new PC before he spent out nearly £2000!! I only work in the industry as a specialist, have had computers since the ZX80, fix them for friends and family and talk non stop computers, (actually, maybe that's why)! His father in law is a gardener who dabbles with computers, (nothing against gardeners)! That would explain the Packard Bell, the 5 year warranty he purchased, (part of the £2000), the 256MB memory, the 40gb HD, the total lack of decent software, the connection to AOL he was using at the time and the 17" monitor. The fact that he purchased it from PC World was the icing on the cake. His father in law had also provided him with a lot of software ........ all from coverdisks.

Can you all guess what I'm going to say when he comes knocking because the things gone wrong? That's right, ring your bl**dy father in law! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH....

Sure. I get out of the Marine Corps in 5 months. My only requirements are that you pay to move my family and household goods to an appropriate location, provide adequate housing (including utilities) a reasonable distance from my place of work, and give 100% coverage for health care, work uniforms, and a monthly food stipend.

Boy, until I listed the benefits like that, I thought the Marine Corps sucked. Sorry, I can't accept the offer. Perhaps in another four years?

    >Think about the last time you ordered a music, audio or, >better yet car. Did you ask if certain items were included? >Did you assume that the auto in an ad had an audio, a/c, tilt >wheel, sun/moon roof, leather seats? Even though they >were not specifically each listed!

all those are Extras in most cases where as seats gas/brake petals and a steering wheel are all Needed parts
