Red face PROBLEM OPENING SOME FILES

I have WINDOWS'98 operating system. There are some files in my system with **windows-icon** on them.
whenever I try to open these files by double clicking on them ,- a window titled "open with" appears on the screen which gives the messages:
*******************************
Click the program you want to use to open the file
*******************************

For example:When I tried to open a file with extention ".w" the following message appeared:
**************************************************
CLICK THE PROGRAM YOU WANT TO USE TO OPEN THE FILE
'filename.W'.
IF THE PROGRAM YOU WANT IS NOT THERE IN THE LIST CLICK OTHER.
DESCRIPTION OF '.W' FILES
____________________________________________(space for writing the description)

---------------------------
.
.
.
(list of installed programs)
---------------------------
OK CANCEL OTHER
**************************************************

I chose a program but it could not open the file
as it does not understand its language.
Iam unable to open any of '.w' files as they are attempting to open through the same program.
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW:
(1)How can I switch to other program to open files of type '.w'.
(2)HOW can I determine, which program to be used to open a file of particular type.

--------Thank U very much--------

I'm not very experinced(about 3 years into computers) but I'm not heard of the w extention. Are you sure the true extention isn't hidden? Whats the full name and location of the files? Perhaps you've discovered some cookies.

.w Word chart file (APPLAUSE)

On the windrivers homepage there is a link that says File Type Extensions that leads to http://www.windrivers.com/tech/filext.htm, which is where I found the info.
I know enough to know that there is alot that I don't know.
