I used to sell computers to school systems and I recieved a support phone call from the principal of the local high-school saying that one of his teachers is complaining that none of the TEN brand new - one week old computers are not working. So I responded to the site and the principal went with me to survey the damage, make sure that the teacher was able to give me more information and to see what was going on, since it looked as though we had sold them crap.

Well i will never forget the look on his face when we walked in to the classroom and saw all ten machines in various states of dissarray as the students had taken advantage of the sub that was in two days prior and disassembled all ten machines to see how they worked.

The principal apologised and ran from the room, needless to say I felt sorry for them and was able to get three machines working again - without charging them, gaining me a customer for life.

This may sound horribly cynical, but I think there are far too many people with computers out there. I work in a corporate environment supporting about 300 users and I have seen the pathetic (if any) training these folks get put through when they are given a computer. I end up doing most of the training just answering questions while I am setting up the PCs. I believe that if you are not going to take the time to train them how to use and maintain the computers, you are doing your employees a disservice in that they will get easily frustrated because they do not know what they are doing. You also minimize the productivity gains you should be getting from your company's investment in the computers because the employee will not be using the computer to their fullest capacity. Too many times I see people fumbling through a procedure on a computer that they could do manually in less time because they do not know how to properly use the machine.
