Bah, that is complete rubbish. Everyone knows external modems are more risky because viruses come from external sources

The difference is one goes on the INSIDE of your computer, and the other goes on the OUTSIDE.
Sorry. I just had to say it.

An external contains a UART 16550 to connect to the PC, an internal doesn't need one as it is pluged straight into the board.

Besides that, external modem require external power supply.
Seriously saying, it's theoretically possible to destroy any new modem by especially written "virus".
Every new modem has rewritable flash memory and thus, can be rewrited with wrong info like it well-known virus Win95.CIH did... Theoretically,of course, but who knows...

An internal modem only lets you call local #'s, while an external modem lets you get on the World Wide Web. RIGHT ?!?!

I dunno
i do know I make lots of money around here on modems after a storm...
and mostly Externals cost more money cause they have their box on em instead of sticking them in the box.....

external modems are less picky as to what software will dial out with them unless you are really good at modem strings. If you need an external modem, good luck finding a serial cable, especially the 3com that uses a 25/9. This stuff is getting obsolete, like the ISA slot.
