Stupid tech gifts.....
Ever had a freind/family give you a computer related gift under the impression that you might like it?
Most recently for my birthday my brother gave me a zip disk. *pauses* a zip disk? ok I have a zip drive with a stack of zip disks right next to it, I don't use it too much, but I certanly do know how much he paid for it(about $9) .
Another one : a year or two ago my dad got me a Cirque touch pad, ok I tried it for about a week before I went back to a mouse, just because I don't want the feel and convenience of a laptop all the time.
Another bad gift my dad gave me was a crappy sound card.
May the Schwartz be with you

4. Clothes
5. Almost all computer software (I recieve things like M$ Golf 97 or Quicken 98 basic...WHAT THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THEM!!!)
Top Good Gifts...
1. Money
2. Gift Certificates
I'm just a sinner saved by grace.

I have made it VERY clear to family and friends that I do NOT want any tech gifts. If you REALLY want to get me one, then YOU MUST ASK JASON (He is my best friend, and knows what I would want, and what my standards are.)
I have made the analogy of going out and buying a professional hairdresser a blow-dryer from KMart. (lots of my family is female) A blow-dryer's a blow-dryer, Right? RAM is RAM, right. What's one stick to another. Well to me, it the same as the blow-dryer thing. I get particular about the tech things I like.
I must say, my wife gave me a note for any RAM that I wanted to buy... That was cool.
And Yes, I have recieved zip disks as a gift before...

I've had this happen to me before, but not with computer stuff. I've received crappy GAMING gifts (i.e. back when I used to play Magic, a $25 rare, but useless in play and untradeable), and God only know how much crappy clothing. What is it with relatives that they insist on buying me things that are going to the Salvation Army as soon as they're out of sight?

for Xmas I got some PD copies of Hallowen Harry and Duke Nukem (the original).
I played them for all of 1 day, then went back to Doom.......
The thought was there though - considering my parents didn't even know what a PC was.........! My dad was well impressed with racing post online though!

If anyone insists on getting me anything tech related, I point them to thinkgeek.com
I want the t-shirt that reads: "no, I will not fix your computer".

My family is pretty good about it all. They ask and I tell. Normally I really don't want gifts. Unfortunately, my parents really bug me a lot of times so I end up having to tell them.. direct links to the webpages and all. One year my sister bought me 3 CDRW's. I didn't even have a rewriter yet. Smile and thank them... Smile and thank them.

Hmmm...
Never received zip disks but I did get 3 CD-R blank disks.
Stored part of my mp3 collection on 2 of them...and a backup of an application on another.
Also received my very first computer as a Christmas gift. a 386sx/16 in december 1992.
My relatives know for the most part what kinds of tech things I want so they rarely get me anything tech related.
A friend did give me 2 IBM aptivas from his former defunct startup for free. The p200 one is going to my roommate who will be lending it to his sister so she could use of for schoolwork(summer class in college)...the p233MMX is mine.

OKay, I have made it very clear that if people are going to buy me anything associated with my Home Theatre or Computer, they must clear it with me first. I have given away more crap that I got as presents than I care to. Do people just think a sound card is a sound card or that some $99 JBLs are going to replace my Klipsch reference series? The thing that sucks is you have to stand there like "Oh wow!! You got me this, cheap piece of crap that I'm going to tie to the back of my car and drag over the GWB. You're too kind." Let's not forget the Jaz disk debaucle. Pretty expensive yes, but I don't have a Jaz drive.

'Bout the only 'tech gift' I've received was from my aunt who gave me a book & CD of really really really bad computer cartoons. I think it was titled "E-mail this book" or something like that.

I love it when people try to pawn off their AOL CD's to me. "Here,.. I thought you could use a few of these... What? You already have some? Oh, well, I just thought that since you're into computers and stuff that..." Blah Blah Blah!!

I had my burner for like a year, and my dumbass brother in law got me this steaming turd of a program called InstantCD Suite. Did he think I just did not use my burner for a year? I know it's the thought that counts, but damn, think harder!
My wife, who does not have a tech bone in her body ('cept mine... Uh-oh, here comes the mod edit!) usually does really well. My birthday is really close to Christmas, and two years ago she got me a 17" Viewsonic, then for Christmas got me a kick-*** Lexmark printer! Man, sometimes I really love her....
