My scanner took control of my stereo!!!

just recently I moved my scanner off my desk to make room for a second monitor, so I placed it right next to my GE stereo/tapeplayer combo(which is attached to my computer for its speakers)

I finally got around to scanning something yesterday and halfway through the scan the radio turns off, then turns on changes the preset and the volume starts going up, etc. Every scan after that does something similar.

I am guessing that the scanner is somehow putting out garbage infrared signals to the stereo because it preforms a preset scan which is only on the remote.

More likely RFI - mum's mouse interferes with the radio.

Near where I live must be a crazy radio tower, because I have a pair of speakers that, even when turned off, you can hear a local radio sstation on them. These are computer speakers too, there's no frequency dial or anything. As long as they are plugged in, radio it is. Very strange and annoying

I get the same if a Taxi or Emergency vehicle goes past my house using it's radio. My neighbours CB didn't help either until his aerial suddenly 'disappeared' one evening <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

My mate has the same problem but its not a stereo that is effected its his VCR. The VCR kicks into life and starts recording, fast forward/rewind as though a kid is mucking around with the remote.

My grandparents had the same thing happen with their old (late 1970's) console television. They had just installed the (at the time) new technology florescent bulbs. All of a sudden, the TV remote quit working. They were completely puzzled, but I got an idea, and turned off the lights. The remote worked perfectly. Turned the lights back on, and the remote stopped working again. Somehow the frequency from the bulbs was just right to jam the IR remote.

Their previous TV, a 1960's era console with an ultrasonic remote, was very easy to toy with. Apparently as a very young kid I'd learned how to mimic the sound the remote made, and could force channel changes at will. They eventually wound up getting a new TV. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
