Flabooble!
New system - what do you think?
I’ve made a decision (more or less) on what I’m buying. It will be for photo editing and video editing.
Asus P4b533 Retail - Intel 845 Chipset North, Ich4 South
Intel Pentium 4 2.0a ghz 512k 400mhz Bus – retail
Kingston - 512mb DDR 2100 (I’ll get more later when the prince drops)
Maxtop Csx-147k-Gf-Usb-Gray Pc Case (Fans: 1 X On The Top Panel And 1 X On The Side Panel 350w Power Supply 2xfans 7-Bay Front Usb Connector Mid Tower) – hey, it’s only $49
Sound Blaster Live 5.1
Mitsumi FDD
Panasonic DVD-ROM
Total prince is about $620 American with shipping from NewEgg.
Have:
Matrox 550 32MB Video Card
IBM deskstar 120GB ata100
Maxtor 60GB ata100
So. What do you think? Any opinions? Hack it up – blast it (no AMD vs. Intel though). More importantly let me know if any of you have had issues with any of this stuff. Do you thing the extra $75 for the 2.26ghz 533bus P4 is worth it?

Beautiful system, only 1 recomendation though.
If your going to do video editing, I would assume some of these video's will have sound. If thats so, get a audigy or at least a 5.1 dolby digital card. Quality is much better and the audigy platinum comes with some pretty sweet sound editing software.
other than that, save the $75 and spend it elsewhere (bar)

looks great, but it seems you have left the option open to yourself for overclocking.
If you plan on O/Cing, I would go with the 2.53. You'll have a higher overhead and get better overclocks out of it.

If your gonna overclock it I'd go with the 1.6a myself and better ddr

that too, like Corsair XMS3000. It's pricey, but worth it.
But you'll get ALOT more out of a 2.53GHZ than a 1.6. The 1.6A maxes out at about 2.3 - 2.35GHZ.
The 2.53 has the 533FSB stock and can max at about 3.0.

I don't overclock, well, unless the CPU is sooo far past it's lifecycle that who cares if it burns up. At that point - what benefits do you really reap (+5-10%??? Whooptie do.)?
Oh, and the card is 5.1 compliant. I don't even hook up anything more than my speakers and subwoofer though. I've wondered how much the sound card really effects video's sound but anticipating that it does have an effect I did choose the SB Live 5.1 card over the onboard sound.

I would agree with Damned Angel, the audigy are better then the live, even if you just get the verison that is just the card, or if you go all out and get the Platinum Ex...
Also, if you're video editing, wouldn't you want more than 32MB on the video card? I think there are some out today with 64, but that can be a later upgrade since you have the 32MB card now..
Good luck with it ILTU!

Matrox cards are pretty standard for video editing (affordable editing) as they have a 2D performance that outperforms other cards - even the newest cards comming out. When doing photo/video - it's all about doing 2D so it's superior.
Also, some high end cards alow effects to be rendered instantly so you do not need to waste processor time to do it. I don't think the card I have is going to help with that, but it will help the overall quality - especially with effects. I was able to create a pic with it and it does look better than the one rendered with another card (an ATI Rage Fury). Basicaly the artifacts and other garbage was gone - the card knew how to render things properly without leaving lines and other stuff behind - that's what I was looking for.

The Corsair memory is about $30 more - so is it better overall (more compatability/fewer errors) or just better for overclocking?

On my particular board (Soyo P4S DRAGON Ultra), I couldn't count all the RAM modules that didn't work on my fingers, toes, or both. But as for RAM that worked, Corsair.
I couldn't get OCZ or Kingston to work under any settings other than DDR200 with slow-a$$ed timings.
Nanya I could turn the timings up on.(pathetic, huh?)
But the XMS3000 (DDR370) cranks DDR376 (188x2) with the timings cranked up.
But I also have another Sis645 board, I had an ECS board w/OCZ PC3000 on it, and it couldn't be beat. http://service.madonion.com/compare?2k1=3196989
So alot has to do with the what that board likes.
But I love Corsair, I've had it to 400 and it seemed to hold out just fine, the OCZ required a little work to get to 366

I ordered it. Can't wait.
I did wind up going with the corsair memory and the audigy sound over the 5.1. It was a cost difference of like $60, so what the hell. Got a couple antec case fans with the blue lights for poops and giggles (to replace the top and side mounted fans).

Congrats on your new system. So does this mean you are going to show us even more "special effects" with your pictures/vidoes ?

32meg of video RAM is plenty for video editting.
Thought about something a little quieter? Cases full of fans are a pain when you're trying to think.
I'm in charge and I say we blow it up

Sure - more pics later. I have a few I could post - perhaps a picture thread later...
As for the fans - I have tinitus (ringing ears)kinda bad and I really like the distraction of the fans background noise - especially at night.
