Hi, Try looking closely at the Mobo with a magnifying glass for some model #'s like
M748LM or such and do a google search with just those #'s and see what you get. I have a system with one of those boards and come to find out it is a PC chips board and their website had all the info...manual in PDF format and BIOS updates...Hope that helps..kg

When you turn the system on get the BIOS number and post it here. Perhaps we can help you determine the MB manufacturer and model#

If you are sure its PC CHips This site should help you find a model number and any other information you will need.

ugh guys, this is obviously a design problem, and were all ignoring the most valuable thing here. L2 Cache, is the most important thing to to a processor and to win2k. the faster and more chache you have devoted to the processor the faster win2k will run for you. this is obvious for the fact that most code can fit within 256kb but not within the paltry 64kb that the k6-2 has. And the cache on your motherboard is way too slow for they system cause it still runs at the same bus speed as the fsb.

if it is a pc chips board and it sounds like it might be, try looking at the bottom of the screen at the same time the ram counts up at boot-up. See if it says like M571 or 577 or 598 etc somewhere in the row of numbers\letters along the bottom, then you can go to the pc chips website and get the info.
I have used tons of K6-2s and I still like them even now, for a cheap machine...

I think the computer is sluggish because of the HDD and RAM..

if you chekc the performance of your system you would see that although athlon 800 is "only" 300MHz faster the difference in technology is very big and affects speed.

as for the HDD - your Mobo doesn't even support UDMA 66 and I'm guessing you're using a 5400 rpm HDD..

This may account for slow performance..

    my advice:

Set minfilecache amd maxfilecache to 65536

get XQsetup http://www.xteq.com and follow some the tips in system and memory management..

    Hope it helps

thanks for all the input so far everyone, as an update, I just put in a 20gb HD this weekend, and reformatted everything, tried taking out the 64m stick of RAM, but everything is still very sluggish and drags =(

also, the mobo is a PCCHIPS Super Socket 7, M598LMR
