Angry Asus CUSL2-C problems

took my rock solid system with an Abit VT6X4 mobo and put in Asus Cusl2-c mobo...have had soooo many lock ups...installed the latest Intel INF...replaced the Ram (micron PC133 CL2 128 sticks..tried 3 different ones) replace my SBLive with 2 others, replaced my Geforce2 V7700 with a voodoo3 and and an Elsa MX...i get intermittant lock ups at post on my Western Digital 30Gig drive...this is the second mobo from asus...the system worked fine with my Abit board...the only thing that has made the most improvement to the system stability is i replaced the power supply (250W) with a 300Watt one...seems 90% better. I was having other problems such as alot of corrupt file messages...reboot and run that file again and would be just fine...btw i'm running Win98SE for now...i've done allllll the updates...i've got my VT6X4 abit board back in now and it is flawless...any suggestions or have you heard of these problems on CUSL2-C boards...ohhh and i have a 933 p3 for proc..thx

I know you probably did, but I have to ask... did you FDISK/Format the HD when you changed the motherboard?

Yes I did Fdisk/Format. I have 2 Western Digital HDD's one is ata100 the other is ata 66 and both of them 30.7gig. I have changed the order on my ide...first time it was primary ata100 slave ata 66 and on secondary channel i had CDrom primary and CDRW on slave. Then i changed the order to ATA100/CDROM and secondary ATA66/CDRW (asus told me to do that)...and i've checked the jumpers (not my first BBQ
After changing the order of drives is when i got the "secondary hard disk failed" at post...hit the reset button and it goes past that point just fine...then while running Defrag on that secondary HDD it will Lock the computer up and the only way to get the secondary channel to post again is to completely power down, then reapply power...so i put the HDD's back on the primary channel and i don't have that problem, but i get "corrupted cab" error when tryin to run certain applications such as 3dMark2001 etc...then i just reboot and it runs those files just fine...formatted two times now...btw I ordered an ABIT VH6T mobo with 256Megs Ram yesterday ...gonna replace this board (once again) with the abit board and leave the configuration the same ...format the drives...and see if my problem goes away...alot of BS for ATA 100 support huh?lol

You said that you had a Secondary HDD Failure. Did you not redetect the HDD's in the Bios after swapping cables???? Hence wy it worked again after swapping back.

yes i have done that in the bios...but this happens randomly...when it locks up on a reboot...i have to hit reset because it is locked at that point...after hitting the reset...it goes past that and does not submit an error on the IDE device...also the as i mentioned..during a defrag ...the system will lock up on the secondary IDE drive, and a reset will not reboot...must power completely down before it will reboot

One thing I noticed with an Asus CUSL2, is that the damn thing POSTS so quickly, it was already on the IDE detection stage (and therefor failing) before my drive had spun up, athough it was a much older drive I got for free from a friend, in the mere 5.1 GB size.

Upon disabling fast memory test, which causes it to now test the memory for a full 4 or 5 memory counts, things worked much beter.

Make sure you use 80 conductor IDE cables. Blue goes to the MB, black to the Master or Single drive, and gray to the slave, if used.

Have used two different sets of 80pinners...I put both HDD's back on the Primary channel...no more lock ups with the HDD...but now my CDROM drive (Creative 48X) sites there and the drive door opens and closes..opens and closes...opens and closes ( get the picture?) until i stop it by pushing the eject button...then works fine..lol...

Just for everyones info...I replaced the asus cusl2-c board with an Abit VH6T and have no problems whatsoever....but...i put the Asus Cusl2-c board in my sons computer and it is doing fine in that system..no problems...his computer is identical but is minus a CDRW and a second HDD...guess it was just picky with how i had the drives arranged or something.
