Post power supply?

...Putting together a friends...1.4 Athlon and the Asus A7A266 Socket A. Once everything was in, and I powered up, it didn't recognize the HDD and the processor speed was at 1050Mhz. The only thing that I can come up with is that the power supply is too weak, I believe it's a 150V or 200V, whatever they make around there, not sure. When we checked the BIOS, the temp was going up to 65ºC (137ºF) which is not good, therefore we turned off and checked everything. When we check the voltage, the middle one that gets 12+ V was getting at least 13V, and no more then 13.9V. Could it be because of the power supply?
I have it set to auto on the CPU, going just with DDRAM, I am 99% sure that everything else is fine. Should getting the 250 or 300 watt power supply solve the problem? Please help....

what I meant by just going with the DDRAM, was that there was no SDRAM, cause it takes both, and the chip and board were checked for 72 hours before sending, so they do work....thanks again

What's the wattage of the current power supply? I think the minimum wattage you should attempt to use is 300 and myself I would not use less than 350 watts.

did you set the fsb to 133? my 1.13 runs at 850 with fsb set to 100.

I could be wrong but 137 doesnt sound outrageous. Depending on ambient.

My 1GHZ/100 T-bird was running fine on a 250 watt power supply with two fans cooling the heat sink, 2 hard drives, 1 CD-ROM, 1 NIC, 1 TNT video card (AGP). My major problem was in that the motherboard would vary the VCore too much in auto mode. Once I set it, it's run fine ever since.
I do agree, however, that a 300 watt or better power supply is reccomended to be safer. So, I recently got a 400 watt power supply to correct that.

First, as I understand it, it isn't the watt necessarily that makes the difference it's the amps certain lines put out. No I don't remember that right now. I would definately say you are underpowered from what you said though. Yes some 250 w power supplies are enough to run an athlon but , especially the faster ones you should have 300 -350+ to get good reliable performance. Especially if you match it with some good video, etc.....

I'm guessing that you meant 150 or 200 watts. If that is the case, then yes you are under powered. Especially with a 1.4 athalon. Gateway computers like to squeeze by with the bare minimium for power and it causes all kinds of problems.
I know enough to know that there is alot that I don't know.

Definately power supply isn't good for that config. Try another one .
Also buy good cooler like ThermalTake for CPU, and use thermal compound.

good cooler? thermaltake? isn't that an oxymoron? seriously though, alpha or global win is a better choice. and if you want it to be quite, get a thermalengine.
So, so busy lately. Oh, where do I start?

I did't say "ThermalTake", I said "like ThermalTake". I haven't tried yet "Alpha" or "Global Win", but I can add, what "Titan" is very good coolers also. And cheaper than ThermalTake's counterparts,by the way.
