Computer Freezing??
My computer freezes when I play games. Sometimes it only takes a few seconds, sometimes a few minutes. Everything else runs fine, but when I run a game such as Hitman, Half-Life, Midtown Maddness or High Heat Baseball, something that requires a lot of CPU and Video usage, it freezes. Although when I run a game that doesn't require as much graphics such as Roller Coaster Tycoon and other lesser games, it's fine. And one other thing, it only freezes once I start playing, it's fine in the options, before I start.
Of couse I have a fan on the CPU, and I also have a fan on my ATI 32MB Rage Card. I really have no idea what else it could be? Any suggestions. Btw, I'm running WIN ME, which I hate, but if some think I should go back to Win 98 or something else, please help.

How much memory do you have in there? It could simply be a RAM/Virtual Memory problem.
Just an idea

I have 160, one 128 PC100, and one 32 PC 66 or 100. This problem just started happening a few weeks ago, I have had this system for 2 years now, the CPU is a K6-3 450. Should I maybe get rid of the 32 megs, I have had it for 5 years now, it's from a previous system?

Could it just be getting to hot, cause I didn't have this problem before, and it does get kinda warm in the room, not from the comp though, room location.

yes overheating can definatly be the problem. I was just going to say that. A CPU will lock the computer if it gets too hot. Too hot for it to do anything. Make sure that you have sufficient cooling inside you case including a CPU heatsink and/or fan a PS fan and sometimes it is also good to have a extra case fan on the back or the front of the case. That is how i have it and i dont have any problems with overheating.

you may want to toss the 32 mb, especially if it is PC66 because your k6-450 is running on a 100mhz bus x 4.5 so PC66 ram could cause lock-ups on a high memory usage game.

Just a thought but i had a system that would lock up while Benchmarking the Video using 3DMark2001 which is a graphic intensive program....i replaced the ATX power supply from a 250watter to a 300watter and that fixed it..just a thought...and i guess i would make sure i have the most resent drivers for sound and video...gl

Try updating the motherboard BIOS to the lates and then installing the latest .inf files for your chipset. Most likely you have a VIA chipset, and the older revisions frequently had similar problems.

I use a K63-450 cpu too .. it does NOT like
66mhz RAM, so I definitely would pull that smaller RAM stick first .. even if it's
actually PC100. I've seen many slow/lockup problems solved that way.

I'd go with getting rid of the 32mb ram
Also you might want to make sure that you've cleared out your .tmp files, made sure you have enough pagefile space etc, etc... , also adding maxfilecache=12288 into your system.ini.
you never know, they worked for me, I have a k6-550 that had similar prob's, I just increased my Virual memory to double my Ram, and hey presto no more dropouts....
