Angry Control Panel Gone

Here is the situation. Our Network Admin took our contorl panel away on our 2000 machines at work and didn't realize that there are quite a few things we need it for. Anybody know how to enable it? Is it possible if he has done it from our Server? Thanks in advance.

Hey, its another Arizonian, cool. . well, i don't know if its the same in W2K, but do a search for *.cpl. i had a problem a while back missing some control panel icons and I had to reinstall the .cpl files for them. I don't know if that will help, but just my .2 worth.
by the way, where are you at?
I think the problem is either an ID10T or PEBCAK error

Hi as a system admin I feel I have to say something;

"Administrators Know Best"

I can understand some users love to have controll over their systems. However in a workplace certain policies must be used.

if you require access to more "advnace" feature than your System admin has given you - the right way is to talk to him - no go and try to find backdoors.

let me tell you that anyone in my company who messes around with policies finds himself without a job - anyone who needs something changed and picks up the phone usually get it his way (as long as it's not against company policies..)

System admins are there to help the useres and consider the best interest of the company.

sometimes we do make changes that restrict more than what peole like to have - sometimes we change them back for some users sometimes we don't.

No excuse to act like a hacker in your own
company...

To be honest , if any of my users bypassed anything i put in place , i would have them fired on the spot , end of story.
This is a policy i have in place with management as it is.
I have taken laptops away from sales guys just for reloading without my consent. If _I_ set a policy , then _I_ need to be spoken with , if you have a valid reason for a policy to be removed , then , _I_ will make the decision.

its not worth it dude. just make the admin do all Control panel work , he will get tired of it and just turn you loose after a while , if you arent harming the system.
Life is good...sometimes...

Yeah, agreed with Condor 100%. The Network admin was employed for exactly that pupose - To Admin the Network. I dont see why you would need access to the control panel anyway, as its not your machine, and the admin would have it set up to how it should be for the users.

like condor said, if u have a good reason, talk to your admin, but its stupid to be a hacker at your own company - and a good way to get fired.

Yep, Condor, Tech & Burn are exactly right. If you feel you need access to something in the control panel, you need to talk to your admin. If it's his policy, and he has the final say over all IT decisions, it's unprofessional and very rude to try to hack it and gain access without his consent.

Condor you are right for some Extent.
Maybe the Admin did it unintentionally and so there is a reason to Fix it.Maybe Now he is not in place and people need to do their job.

I will recommend to solve the Problem and to notify the Admin what are the causes and Situation.

Sys Admins are powerfull (and it should stay that way) but don't forget they have to "Protect and Serve"...

Red face

Well for your information sirs. Our network admin is just learning to implement these policies seeing what they do. I already went to him and asked to change it back. He didn't get around to it before he left. He has a few days off and was supposed to change it back. I am in the management dept. also. I need my control panel and that is why I pose the question. No devious reasons. So with that you don't have to worry I am going behind their back. You don't have to assume the worst, and I don't mean to be rude. I am in Tempe, AZ. by the way.
Also I searched .cpl and found them but what would I do to get the extensions back? Any help.

Nevermind fellow techies, I have solved the problem. Went into regedit:
H-Key User-Software-Microsoft-Windows-Current Version-Policies-Explorer/
Modifyied the value of the "NoControlPanel" key to 0. After that, I got to a command prompt and typed control and there it was. Thanks for all the Help.
