Need help restart in DOS mode...
Need help restart in DOS mode...
When trying to restart my Win98SE PC in DOS mode (shutdown-select "restart in DOS mode") I get the message:
C:\>C:\Progra~1\creative\SBlive\dosdvr\SBEINIT.com
Error: Memory Manager not detected
Creative SB16 Emulation Driver requires EMM386 or similar
Creative SB16 Emulation Driver NOT loading.
What should I do:
reinstall the SB live drivers or try to find that EMM386 (does that have something to do with extended or expanded memory manager???)
Thanks to all who can help

Go to start button
Click on run
type "sysedit"
go to config.sys
enter this line below
"device=c:\windows\emm386.exe ram"
save and exit
(also make sure you have himem.sys loaded as well.)
If you aren't understanding this let us know and i'll explain it simplier.

a couple of weeks ago I was getting a slew of error messages on boot-up regarding errors in the config.sys on lines 13,14,15,16, ect. I resolved that issue by renaming the Config.sys to Config.001(the same for autoexe.bat) These files aren't really needed to run Win98... or so I thought...
any ideas jettlag

Creative Labs modifies these files to enable DOS mode SoundBlaster drivers.
Either re-install the drivers from the installation CD or copy/paste the relevant lines back into them.

make sure emm386.exe exists in the c:\windows directory.
if not extract it from the win98 cd or copy it from a friends win98 PC.

When you say extract, you mean run extract at the DOS prompt?
If yes, what is the exact syntax? I'm kinda new to the tech life.
I thought extract only takes cabinet files; is this in a cab file?

In win98 the easiest way to extract files is to use the system file checker. Basic instructions for using the System File Checker are at the address below.

extract/? at the command prompt will give you the syntax for extract. Win98 has the ext command which is an extension of the extract command. It allows you to type ext, then it asks what dir to extract from then where you want to extract to. I love dos but for one file I would go with the SFC.
And yes, it is in a cab file. With the SFC you don't have to specify the cab file.
I know enough to know that there is alot that I don't know.
