Post P200/233MMX and CPU Fans

Just want you guys to confirm something here.

I opened up one of the aptivas which is a p200. It has a 1.5 inch tall heatsink on top of the CPU, but no fan. Am I missing something or shouldn't there be a CPU fan on top of that heat sink?

Around there is where the major brand name manufacturers stopped doing that, but I've seen dozens of boxes like that (some with truly ridiculous heat-sinks, looked like a chunk of aluminum siding).

However, chances are there was a case fan right beside the chip, right?

I don't remember seeing a fan next to the CPU on the case. I will have to confirm it when I go home though as I am currently at work.

Wayward is right, probably either the case fan or the PSU fan are located VERY near to it......either way, anytime I get one of these machines in that the manufacturer feels does not need a CPU fan, I add one in immediately.......$7 to save a processor?...Well worth it!!!!!

    Hey everyone,

Checked the machine.....there is a large fan a little below the CPU...and the darn case is designed in such a way that I cannot add a CPU fan

Those idiots placed the CPU w/heatsink right under a 3.5" bay...

Thanks for all your help....looks like IBM messed me up...but hey...the machines were free...

I popped open a Dell P2-400 the other day, no fan, just a heatsink riveted on, like most of them are. I unplugged the broken case fan, and added a fan to the CPU, and plugged it in in the place of the case fan. Only so much you can do with retail computers.

This is not uncommon. Lots of manufacturors (Compaq especially!) use a huge heatsink instead of a small heatsink + fan. I guess it saves a couple dollars, but if they sell hundreds of thousands of computers, that's a lot of money saved. The larger heatsink is also less vulnerable to overheating should there be a fan failure.

I AGREE WITH YA! Compaq never comes with Fans... only with a heatsink brick-size!
