    Cool Dead IBM Drive ?????

Hey gang, heres one for ya. I have a customer with a Gateway Essential computer with an IBM 10.2gig 7200rpm ATA\IDE drive. The machine starts to boot fine, then an error message saying that sectors are bad pops up. Hit enter and scandisk runs but finds no problems. Norton Disk Dr finds el-zippo too!! If you continue on thru and attempt to load the operating system, it generates the good old " Can't write to drive C" error. I hate that one.

I went to IBM's site and downloaded their diagnostic software. Its called IBM Test Drive. When I run a test it gets about half way thru and generates an error saying that the internal drive temp limit has been exceeded.

Its obvious to me that this drive is toast. I just wondered if anyone else has ever seen this error.

    Thanks

Before you chalk it up as bad, replace the ide cable.

Yeah, its pretty common with the essentials, if its the ****ty flex case design. Along with a lot of modem problems.

Probably bad then....but you know what burnes me is that when I bought my WD 7200 drive it told me to only mount it horizontal. Yet when I open up the Cow box or a Dell or Micron they are mounted any which way. Obviously these drives need to be horizontal for a reason.(possibly bearing?) and they sure are not mounted to allow cooling either.

Have you tried booting to floppy and checking out the fdisk settings? Could be the user tried something funky, or a virus might've mucked things up?

try booting to a DOS prompt from a floppy then run scandisk in DOS. its been my experiance that scandisk from a DOS prompt catches things that a windows scan will sometimes miss.

if that doesnt help then id say the disk is toasted,... happy shopping.

Also you might want to check the BIOS hd settings, I have seen them cause this problem before.

    Cool

Its confirmed guys! The drive is dead! Thanks for all the help.

I agree with you Larommi. It is strange how they mount the drives in many of the "big" company machines. I too have always been under the impression that the drives are best suited to be mounted right side up. This particular drive, by the way, was mounted on edge.
