Unhappy My Muters Died a death for no reason.

AMD Duron 850 (not over clocked)
    Abit KT7A motherboard.
    256 Meg 133 cas2 memory.

My computer died on me. I was using it when it just shut down for no reason. When I tried to restart it nothing happened. My HD whirls a bit then the cdrom light flashes then the floppy drive light comes on and stays on.
I have cleared cmos, reseated my cards and chip but still no joy.

Hope some master blaster out there can help.

    Regards JJ

First things to check....check monitor connections , try another video card , try another monitor .It sounds like your board is psoting , but no video signal is getting out or the monitor is dead.

    RKring1.
I changed the monitor and the graphics card for another AGP, no joy, then I tried a PCI but again nothing.
Do you think it could be the motherboard?

Reseat the RAM, you wouldn't believe the problems this solves.

If all else fails...get some thermal paste...then disassemble and reassemble the entire system. Although i think it's probably the mobo.

But coincidences do happen, I once shut off my 486 at night and the next morning, no video, wasn't even touched. Turns out the video card was loose. Later that 486 died after the exact same problem you're having...

Check the power supply, have seen many a problem solved by doing this, That have had symptoms as yours.
Would you like fries with that?

This may well be your problem but first unplugg the molex's and plug them back in or if there are some not in use then exchange them with the one's in use. I had the exact problem with my sys weeks ago and it was a bad molex connector.
I hope that someday we will be able to put away our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

    Red face

    Thanks guys.
I have done a full strip an rebuild but still have the problem.
This power supply idea, how do I go about checking it? The case n psu is only 2 months old.
I have only the one set of power leads.
I have read on the forums that 1 in 15 Abit KT7As is faulty, is this true?

    Regards JJ

I was talking about the Molex's the individual power connectors that go to your HD or CD ROm pull the out and put them back . But if no go just power down and remove the PSU and replace it with a new one.

    Ok!
Swaped all the plugs but no go, this baby is dead in the water.
    Thanks anyway.
I think it must be the MB or the cpu.
What do you think would be the most likely?
I know quite a few people have had this problem from the forums. What I would like to know is, has it anything to do with the board version? mine is v1.0, but I know there is a v1.1 out there.
S#^&t this is becoming a nightmare...

Try DANIMALS suggestion , replace the power supply with an AMD approved one . Durons are real fussy about power and even though the supply runs doesn't mean it is supplying correct voltages.I just repaired a 750 yesterday that had a similar problem to yours....power supply would start when jumpered , but wouldn't start the board .

I would try replacing the power supply with another, then if that did not work it's probably the board.

Before I replace the PSU, I can have the cpu or mb replaced coz they are only 5 months old. If its not the PSU it would be a shame to chuck £25 down the grid.
The monitor won't boot and I cannot enter the bios will this still be PSU related?

    All depends on the brand...

definitely 300, but if it's just for testing it doesn't matter

Age has nothing to do with it. Any component can fail at any time and PSU's probably have the highest failure rate of any other component. If the PSU is only 2 months old can't you swap that under warranty as well?
