Post Hard drive & cdrom on same ide cable

Is it okay to hook up a hp cdwriter to the hard drive ribbon , seeing how my secondary cable has a cd-rom and a omega zip drive , also the primary has an ata66 ribbon , does it support cdwriter

I have had that same issue. I resolved it by going hard drive-burner and cdrom-zip on the first and second ide. it was the only way the burner would work without buffer underuns. If you do put the hard drive and zip on the primary, I would be interested in knowing if your hard drive speed decreases.

Iomega internal IDE Zip drives run at Mode 0 which is the slowest of all PIO modes!!!! Your HDD will certainly suffer in performance if you hook this up to the Primary Controller. Just add the CDRW as a Slave to the Primary.

The only problem I see with the burner hooked up to the hard drive is if your using an ATA 66 cable. My dvd drive and burner would only read cds intermittenly with an ATA66 cable, I changed the cable and they work fine. You should be fine, but I would recommend buying a controller card for $40 and saving yourself the hastle and the performance hit.

I have this setup on my home PC and it works great:

Primary master: 10 gig Quantum HD
Primary slave: HP 9100i CD Writer
    Secondary Master: 24X Panasonic CDROM
    Secondary Slave: Zip100 Internal

I think the key to getting this thing to work is to keep all the UDMA capable devices on one channel, and everything else on the other. This is because each channel falls back to the lowest compatible speed. So Darren is right, if you put it on the same channel as the ZIP, the speed of the CDRW would suffer, and you'd probably end up with a coaster factory.

In my setup, both the HD and CD-RW are DMA capable, while the 24X and ZIP are not. It works perfectly!

It's usually better just to get a cheap controller card from what i've experienced.

Think it's a hit & miss kinda deal, seems as though everyone has theirs set different, my set-up is like this
    primary master 10gb Maxtor
    primary slave 30gb Maxtor
    secondary master HP9350cdrw
    secondary slave 52x creative
    works for me
AKPC911, I think you are going test different setups and see what works best
