Question Is the power supply powerful enough?

I tried to fix a frineds machine today to no avail. I think it may be the Power supply.
    Its a compaq machine
    I don't klow the MoBo
    Celeron 633
    128 Mgs ram
Onboard Video and Sound(I think I saw an Intel chip set).
    10 gb western didital
    8.5 gb Maxtor
    Cd-rom
    LG CD-R/RW
    floppy drive

The power supply is 200W(can that be right?)
Should she pick up a 300W power supply?

The big PC makers like HP and Compaq often ship their computers with power supplies less than 200W because they don't need anything more.

In my experience, fingering the blame on the power supply is overstated a lot. Even the AMD systems that "require" certain certified PS's work just fine with uncertified PS's of lower wattages. This is not to say the PS isn't to blame, but maybe if you give us a little more information, we can help you out. It may not be a power supply issue.

    - What exactly is the problem?
    - What are the symptoms?
    - What troubleshooting measures have you tried already?

You must also remember that voltage isn't the only consideration. If the PS is bad and you buy a cheap 300 watt supply (a deer for instance.) the problems may persist or even worsen. don't skimp when it comes to power. Personally, I love the enermax line of power supplies. Not too expensive, and rock solid stable under all circumstances.

but please include symptons of the problem, and I'm sure the bright people her will help you.

    best wishes
