Unhappy After image restore win98 sees a 20gb hd as a 2gb hd.

After installing a new MoBo and 1.4 P4 win 98 now sees a 20 gb hd as a 2 gb. Bios Ids the drive as 20 Gb and when the PC left the shop win98 saw a 20gb hd. Customer brought PC in after a week getting Drive full errors. I have no clue as to what happened or how to recover.

When you run fdisk what does it say the partition size is?? Sounds like maybe the drive was repartitioned.

had a maxtor like that a week or two ago ,,,,this was a 10g and if i remember correct was showing in bios as 10g but at startup (screen) 1g ,,,,customer thought his kid had d/loaded a lot of porn!!!!

i lent the guy a spare drive ,,,and no matter how i fdisked and formated ,,,it came back on screen as 1g.

I can only presume that the electronics had gone faulty ,,,,and as such its still sat here running linux on an old p1 .

the drive was only 14 month old ,,and the retailer only gives 12m warrenty on OEM parts ,,,and maxtor UK will only deal with retailers . if u can prove the company has gone bust ,,,,they will deal direct (uk)

Sounds like it was formatted FAT16 and not FAT32. FAT16 only reads up to 2GB. FDISK the drive FORMAT it FAT32.

is the new motherboard a different chipset? I have seen windows have problems with ide controllers if you swith chipsets underneath it. i tried everything, and the only thing i could do was to do a fresh install.

There isn't a cylinder limiter jumper on it or something is there? I have a 2.8gig drive in one of my 486's which has one of these on to cut it down to 2.1gig (saves ****ing about with EZ-BIOS).
I'm in charge and I say we blow it up

thanks all! Turned out to be a chipset problem with new MoBo. Had to reformat and do fresh install. Came up right.
