Win 98 installation problem, after hardware upgrade...

One of my friends has a problem.
Just upgraded to SOYO SY-5EHM, 64MB SDRAM pc100, Western Digital Caviar 6.4 GB.
The old ones are: CPU P54C 133Mhz, VGA S3 2MB PCI, Sound Card Opti930 ISA.
We installed windows98 after fdisk and format.
    The problem:
After Win98 first boot, the machine freezes.
This happens before anything else appears.
    The mouse cursor freezes too.

I tried some other memory DIMMs. The problem remains.
I've tried another vga (s3 too.)

I've also verified the jumber settings.

Sould I try another SOYO or the memory speed (100Mhz) affects the CPU which runs at 66Mhz?

Does anyone of you guys can help me?

    Thanks you all in advance...

Try your install with nothing but video plugged in. Usually a hang on hardware detect means an IRQ or port conflict.

    Thanks for your reply Reboot.
I finally found what caused it. It was the CD-ROM. It is an old Toshiba, which propably can't read cd-r too (because of the TOC). I will have to replace it, in order to avoid problems in the future...

    Anyway, thanks a lot.

you don't really need to replace it , just go into Safe Mode & disable DMA for the CD-ROM.

This should solve the hang ups.
