Professional Data recovery
I know they exist, I've talked to some of you about them but does anyone know of a good company that does data recovery? Or is there a free/inexpensive data recovery software out there I could try? I will be looking also but if anyone either knows a place that does that kind of thing or some software that might help? We have Lost and Found but that will not see the drive. In fact the drive will not detect. I've put it in manually but on second boot cmos resets.

Spinrite from <a href="http://www.grc.com" target="_blank">www.grc.com</a> is the industry standard.

If the drive won't detect in the BIOS then i don't think you'll have much luck with off the shelf software. All the software i've used in the past relies on the BIOS to see the drive before it will access the data. Here's Ontracks view:
"Ontrack offers a full range of data recovery solutions to address your data loss needs. Unlike other data recovery companies, Ontrack provides exclusive and patented solutions that do not require you to send in your media for recovery. In situations where the hardware is functioning normally, our patented Remote Data Recovery™ service and EasyRecovery™ software solutions can solve your data loss needs safely and effectively in a matter of hours. If another company claims that there is no alternative to shipping your drive, it's because they don't offer an alternative. For situations in which the hardware is physically failing, our In-Lab services will utilize our Class 100 clean-rooms to retrieve your mission critical data."
As your hardware is 'not functioning normally' i'd suspect its a send in job. See
<a href="http://www.ontrack.com" target="_blank">Ontrack's</a> website for more details.

thanks for the response, I knew about spinrite, although not really where to get it. Right now I can't invest that kind of money but I will definately consider it in the future! Anyone know of a good Data recovery place? I've contacted Cherry Systems and they gave me a quote of $85 for initial diagnosis. If the customer is that desprit he can go ahead and contact them. Gotta get back to the grind!

Thanks Orange didn't see your post before I sent in mine. As far as sending it in I believe it will have to be, however in some cases I have been able to manually set the bios and still recover data with lost and found. I've heard good things about spinrite but I don't have enough demand to invest in that either right now.

Just wondering - what exactly the harddive's model? Personally I also do data recovery for my customers,if they asking me for that.
Far not always dead drive means dead mechanics, quite often it can be faulty electronics (such as faulty spindel driver's IC, bad CPU, bad flash or RAM IC, etc).

Ruslan it was a Fujitsu 8gb. Not sure of the exact model though. I did actually think of you Ruslan, but he was in a big rush and I've never done anything like what you do. ( I'd love to learn however ) I think I'd want to try on some old drives before I attempted it for a customer. Don't you like swap the pc card on the bottom of the drives? That would be cool to be able to do that. Any info you are willing to share would be great! My e-mail is [email protected] if you prefer that way of doing things.

I have posted some little tips regarding this issue in that thread: <a href="http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum3/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=001188&p=" target="_blank">http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum3/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=001188&p=</a>
It's true also for Fujitsu drives - by the way, all Fujitsu drives I currently have at home (4,3Gig, 6,4Gig and 10 Gig) I have repaired using this my method (was bad electronics).
There are two incompatible types of electronics, though (regarding to Fujitsu drives - with PB**A and newer PB**U flash ICs and PCB versions).
But almost all electronics within the same serie (i.e. for example, MPC 4,3AT and MPC 10AT as well as others from MPC series) are compatible at least on "user" level.
I have promised to post detailed overview regarding that issue, so I will do it as soon as will have enough free time.
Do not hesitate to ask me about possible variants directly via e-mail,though.
By the way,I have posted my BIOS recovery tips here at Windrivers forums, but my topic due to some weird reasons disappeared few month ago.
Just rechecked it again - looks like link works now. <a href="http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum3/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=17&t=005214&p=" target="_blank">http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum3/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=17&t=005214&p=</a>
Thanx, Scott!
Well,I have to post updates to that my topic also.

I'd go with Drivesavers. You can call and get a free estimate. Mention code DS 11540 and you'll get a 10% discount. In addition, if they can't recover the data there is absolutely no charge.

I know this is old but in case some of you are still interested. Our customer did go with the professional recovery he mentioned. It was $1000 to recover all his son's baby pictures off the drive. Oh and Ruslan it was bad mechanics not just electronics from what I gather...
